(Newbie alert!) How to get out of the Baltic Sea

Commander – Europe at War Gold is the first in a series of high level turn based strategy games. The first game spans WW2, allowing players to control the axis or allied forces through the entire war in the European Theatre.

(Newbie alert!) How to get out of the Baltic Sea

First post and it's probably a dumb question but...

How can I get the German High Seas Fleet (Battleship) out of the Baltic Sea? I have tried putting it on the Kiel port - no luck. ALl movement 'dots' are in the Baltic. Do I have to subdue Denmark first? That seems a bit extreme - poor Danes. I thought there is a canal between Kiel and Wilhelmshaven. Anyway, what am I missing?

Edit: Just ran a test and yes, the Danes need to be subdued before the fleet can get into the North Sea.
