Pathing issue

Post by JudgeDredd »

Once again, the old pathing issue resurfaces [;)]

This one is in the tutorial of all places (and have I seen this map somewhere before? It looks like OWS map)

Anyway, pic shows it. I dismounted my infantry and had them march towards the trees. I gave the MG on the half track a target command at the barn. The half track is staying still, and so is the infantry unit. They look like they are moving, but they can't seem to find their way around the half track....same with my other two squads...because the half tracks aren't moving and the infantry are behind them, the infantry are going nowhere fast, all the while coming under attack from enemy fire.

If I do move the half track I am under no illusions that the unit will move, but I also suspect they will get stuck behind the tank in front.

Quite frustrating.

Yes, the winter maps are from Winterstorm and one is included in Kharkov for the tutorial. We did a lot of work on improving the pathfinding and it seemed much better to me, so I'm disappointed to see you're still running into it.

First thing first, can you please save the game there and send me the save file by e-mail? Second, what happens if you just end the phase, does it "unstick"? I would also like to know what happens if you do move the halftrack just a bit forward. I'll be very surprised if it gets stuck on the tank.

Sorry...chance of save has gone. If I come across it again, I will save and send.

Moved the half track, and the troops moved forward until they got to the tank. They are now stuck on the tank.

Thanks, it really seems like you found a problem here. We'll examine and fix as soon as possible, they shouldn't be getting stuck like this. Seriously, I haven't see that happen in a long time and a lot of playtesting.

One immediate suggestion as a work-around is this: When a unit "unmounts" it will be in the same relative position it "mounted" from. So if you want your squads to "unmount" in front of your vehicle then "mount" them when they are standing in front of it. If you want them to "unmount" to the back, then "mount" them up from the back. Leave a good 10 meters separation and they should never get stuck right after an "unmount".

Wicked nice tip!!!

This is useful not only as a pathing problem but ... If you move your vehicle to the edge of the woods they'll jump out in front, ie in the woods!!

So, planning before the mount for a future dismount is cool, I like that.

Good thing dismounting doesn't cost anything ... If I forget which way I mounted I could dismount enroute, mount again, then prep the vehicle to arrive at dumping location facing the right way !!

Nice tip! ... did I say that before? [:)]

Rob

EDIT : ERIK, bump that tip to the War Room.

I never noticed mounting doesn't cost anything.  Shouldn't it cost a significant amount of movement.  I can see a ton of gamey exploits with this.

It's limited to a set distance (15 meters) and you can't "leapfrog" since it's always measured from where you started and you always unmount to the point you mounted from. We felt that was enough to prevent abuse.
