Almost beautiful? [X(]
SORRY [&o][&o][&o]
You're right: REALLY beautiful !

Now you all know that, hands down, the Corsair is THE most beautiful war plane ever built! Come on! You have to know that![;)]

I won't say it this way. This plane look fine. But in fact, it "feel" powerful. When you see it, you can't imagine something else of power and speed.
That remind me of P-47 Thunderbolt: this plane is not nice (nor ugly), but you can really "feel" it's power.
But for the grace, the agility, the beauty, nothing match the Spitfire, even now !

The corsair is a brute. A very good brute but not good looking in my opinion. The spitfire is one good looking airplane.
For what we are about to receive, may we be truly thankful.

As compared to, say, a woman. [:'(]
Would that not depend on the woman? I know some that look more like Lancaster or even a Swordfish than a Spitfire.....

Maybe, although I'd rank Concorde pretty close if we take civilian aircraft in as well...
Maybe a Concorde with reconstructive surgery...say a nose job, and a bottom tuck...[:D]
RE: !!!!!! DAERHT - ITNA EHT
i'd go for SR-71, perhaps... although for a prop plane, the XP-38 was gorgeous...

I would certainly consider both of these planes in the top five. (Ironically , I mentioned the discussion to my wife , who is definately not an airplane person , and she named the SR-71). To this list I'd add the Rainbow. F-12 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XF-12_Rainbow

For jets, the B-58 Hustler is right up there. I cannot find the photo I took at the Lonestar Air Museum.

You gotta love an airplane that leaks fuel all over the ground because the skin is not hot enough yet to seal the fuel tanks[:D]

I had a car with a leaking fuel line, now I did not know this. The leak was right over the exhaust manifold. The fire department put out the fire when the engine caught fire in the parking lot of a certain superstore.[X(][X(]
No one was in the car. The episode is humorous now but was not at the time.

Didn't care for the Hustler. All those engines and other garbage hung underneath ruined it.

It was also very expensive to maintain from what I understand.

Like the SR-71? It had the opposite problem. As the skin cooled , it leaked . I recall seeing one land at Mildenhall. I thought the plane was leaking , but was told by a maintainer , "no that's normal". Scarey. Especially since they had a tendency to "drive it right into the hanger". [X(]
RE: !!!!!! DAERHT - ITNA EHT
Same problem - it needed to be very hot to keep a seal on the tanks... leaked when on the ground... waiting to take off, or (from your story) on landing.ORIGINAL: AW1Steve

iirc, i don't think it was regular jet fuel - it had a higher flash point so it wasn't as dangerous.
