IJN ASW

Post by Xargun »

Has anyone had any success with driving off or killing allied subs ? Its only Jan 42 in my PBeM and I can't seem to hurt these little pests. They sit in shallow port hexes and I have 1, 2 and sometimes 3 ASW TF in the hex and nothing.

Any ideas ? I just replaced a TF leader with the most aggressive leader I could find and hope this helps - we will see.

It is 25th Dec 41 in my PBEM and I already sank 4 Allied Sub's.

1 by air in Manila harbor
1 by air (Kate on ASW)
1 by depth charge
1 by 14cm guns from a xAK attacked on the surface at night !!!!

The AI sure has.  Well not killing them, but sure has sent quite a few of my subs to the body & fender shop.

When el cid made the ASW more realistic in RHS, players started doing this. It makes a lot of sense if you have experience with submarine ops. Don't complain--send out your local ASW TFs and chase them down.

Even the US against the Japs requires constant attention.  After a Jap sub sank FOUR tankers about 10 hexes from PH in my PBEM, I decided to initiate "operation kill jap subs".

Every plane I had at PH that could go into ASW mode did so, along the appropriate arcs.  Every ship that was ASW capable was put into an ASW tf.  These tf's were sent to every hex with a Jap sub, and over the last 5 days, continually have to have their orders changed to go to "new" hexes with Jap subs.

End result is that I've sunk about 6 subs in the last 4-5 days.. out of many many many subs that appear.  They are still taggin me, and more often than not, I miss or my tf's don't engage.  It's only been the combination of every bomber on low level 100% asw and every capable ship in an ASW tf aggressively pursuing every Jap sub sighting that's lead me to my 6 or so kills.

I'm doing the following:

1) Escort my convoys with at least 3+ depth-charge chuckers.

2) Small 4 platform local ASW groups on patrol routes on my "used" shipping lanes.

3) Dedicated ASW patrol aircraft on short range 3 or 4 hex patrol areas.

4) Don't let fear of Allied subs scare you into staying in port.

5) I too am in early war Dec 21st in one game and first week in my second game. But blast the snot out of Allied sub bases and repair areas. I've hit several subs with bombs while cratering ports, its great frustration relief all JFB's should try this.

KB hitting Manila instead of Pearl on day 1 is a pretty good ASW measure. 22 out of 27 reported sunk in my current PBEM.

WHAT HE SAID>>>>>> (and I mean with a VENGEANCE)It's cost me some too, but by garshk we think we're winning!! But with this input, I'm gonna maybe lower the alt from 6000 - I was trying to consider altitude effects on visibility......
