Need differnt drivers for Nvidia Geoforce 2 mx/400

Post by MacCready »

Hello,

I'm having lockup problems with older Steel Panthers games,no problems with spwaw at all.

I experience lockup usually during the computer/opponent turns.

Several people have told me that it's my 'lemon' video card. This card serves me very well except for older sp games. They say that the card doesn't support VESA mode very well.

I have one set of drivers that came with the card but after searching high and low and even in the middle I've not been able to find ANY other drivers for this card ANYWHERE.

Does anyone know where I might find some?

At first I thought it was a sound card problem(SB 128 PCI)but even if I set the games for no digital sound it still locks up.

AMD Athlon T-bird 1333 mhz/256 ram/win98SE/40 gig HD.

Mac Nvidia driver install program is universal for all Geforce card chipsets and will only install the proper drivers for your card. The latest version is 30.82 click here to download them. Nvidia Driver updates

If your still running Win 98, have to tried an old fashion DOS reboot to run older SP's in DOS mode as they were intended.

Yes I tried that before, when I did the system would reboot right after the sp3 intro instead of going into the game.

Now when I try it the system can't find the cd rom drive in dos and I've allready installed the dos driver for the cd rom.

It worked before,now it doesn't.

MBT does work cause it doen't need the cd but it to reboots into win98 right after the intro.

Now this whole thing is confusing.

I still think the processor is to fast for the game, others diagree and tell me it's my video card.

Now doom2 runs fine and its a vesa dos game.

All very perplexing.

Need to get my 233 mhz fixed.

Im loathed to replace my video card now because it renders everything I have perfectly.Except for this sp dos problem.*

*If the video card is indeed the problem.

There has been a lot of traffic on the SPWW2 mailing list about mx video cards, certain motherboards, win XP and lockups.

With SPWW2 users have had success by replacing the mx card with a ti card. Also by replacing 2mx cards with geforce 3 cards. Even the extreme measure of putting in a card without 3d acceleration worked.

Others haven't seen it if they didn't have a via based motherboard.

There is a known timing incompatability with geforce 2 mx cards and via based motherboards, with no workaround.

With that speed system, you might as well upgrade to a geforce 3 or 4 based card, you are video limited not cpu limited.
thanks, John.

Thanks John G.

The part that perplexes me is there are NO problems with any other software except steel panthers.

Other old dos based games work fine.New software runs awesome.
Why is SP series games special?

However I might as well take your advise because several others have echoed yours.

I'll look for a deal on a geoforce 3 TI 200 or 400.

It may have to do with the compiler that they used for all those games, I have heard strange tales about the watcom compiler.

Another game that others have had problems with, was Age of Rifles, all the games were put out about the same time frame and compiled the same.

Be glad if you can get the Panzer/Allied/Fantasy/etc General series to work. Others have had problems with it, though it may be more sound card related with those, my old win95 machine won't run them due to the lousy sound drivers Compaq wrote for the ESS 1688, but my Win98 machine runs them like a charm.
thanks, John.
