Restart,

Glad to have you (almost) aboard. For myself with WiTP there came a time where I could live with the existing iteration of the game and assume that future tweaks, patches, 'polish' be applied down the line. Indeed with WiTP, the last of the official patches was (IIRC) *years* after initial release. Had I waited for the ultimate (or penultimate) patch, I would have found myself denied the pleasure of a very good game for years. So, for myself, the time to buy WiTP was as soon as it went on sale. Like other 'plank owners', I purchased it the week it was released.

I opted for this approach in large part because of the UV community and the commitment to product improvement that Matrix embraced and carried into WiTP. I knew that it would be supported and would be improved. I was right. I have the same surety with AE, if not moreso.

Patches and 'hotfixes' are coming fast and furiously-witness the discussion on the forum re: artillery effects and submarine / ASW activity. While the 'official' patches are slowing down in frequency now that the second one is out, I expect several more 'interim' solutions over the next several months.

Deprive yourself as you see fit, but you're missing a great game now by waiting.

Cheers.

Golly, must really suck to be you, Terminus. All that snow and no hills to ski it on. Woof!

Here in SoCal, it's maybe 78F, the sun is out, sea is absolutely flat; no breeze at all; the Bougainville's are blooming.

I've never been much of a skier, and especially not under near-blizzard conditions.

Bougainville's? Blooming? From what I recall reading from accounts of those that served there, that was a rather fetid, rotting jungle stench. While green and scenic (see avatar below), it was a primordial soup of an island in the Solomons.

Now if you meant BOUGAINVILLEA, well, that must be a lovely sight. [:'(]

ETA: I've never appreciated the similarity in names before. I can't imagine that Bougainvillea grows or ever was on Bougainville, so I wonder why the namesake?

The Bougainvillea is native to South America. Its connection to Bougainville is that both were discovered by the same French explorer.

Bedtime, methinks... Snowing is falling heavily outside, though the wind hasn't picked up as much as forecast (yet). G'night, y'all...[>:][>:][>:][>:]

Heavy snowfall here in Stockholm as well. I welcome it since it represents a change in the weather pattern - I read an article in the morning newspaper stating that november broke a more than 100 year old record giving us ~7 hrs of sun in the entire month ... I guess you can imagine the grayness [:(]

Just retired from the christmas party. I'm drunk (as h*ll). Image

Those who prefer cross country skiing might enjoy Denmark after a blizzard! Easy terrain, decent beer and food...

Then again, Termie might soon be posting a pic of a frostbit toe!

To my fellow hobbyists on the WitP:AE Forums, warmest greetings:

I had the memorable pleasure a few years ago of investigating in great detail the then-newly released “War in the Pacific”. I spent many enjoyable hours researching this truly epic and enormous wargame; coming to understand it’s operating principles and concepts, discussing several matters I didn’t quite grasp with players whom I’d come to admire through their posts and AARs, and generally becoming enthused and engrossed with the staggering scope of this product. I believe I spent, conservatively speaking, about four months researching that game.

You can imagine my delight when, just a couple of weeks ago, I saw that WitP had launched an “Admiral’s Edition“; and as you can imagine I have been spending many pleasing hours now studying the Forum in detail with all the energy, probity and discernment that a lifetime hobbyist has about such things.

To be honest, I didn’t purchase WitP back then. It was a split decision, a close call, a 51/49 kind of thing. Generally, most people believed the game was very playable provided one agreed to various house-rules and accepted occasional bugginess and shortfalls in the game’s design. As I’ve said, this is an enormous game, the sweep of which covers hundreds of units over thousands of miles over a span of years; my respect for the game’s developers and contributors is really quite high, and to be realistic anything of this magnitude is more than likely going to be a bit thin in an area or two. Whether a certain concept or result of gameplay was a relatively minor and acceptable fault, or a real game-breaker, seemed to be a matter of personal opinion amongst members of the Forum. For me, seeing how much my long-time hobby has benefited from applying the power of the computer has been inspiring; so much more that so many talented individuals have undertaken the task of attempting to simulate the entire war in the Pacific!

So do I plan on purchasing WitP:AE? Yes, absolutely. When? Not soon. Should this be taken as some kind of critique of the Admiral’s Edition as it now exists? Not at all. I have nothing but admiration for the game’s designers and contributors. What has been accomplished here is outstanding, and to give it anything less is to fail to see the forest for the trees.

So why don’t I get the game? Fair question.

In the first place, it’s pretty evident I need a hardware upgrade. It’s not something I can necessarily get to very soon. Secondly, I’ve noticed the patches and bugfixes are coming at a much slower rate now, and the game is reaching a very high state of polish. Simply put, there are far fewer people in the Forums posting concerns about critical fixes, and I believe the best time for me to get the game is not now far off. Thirdly, I believe she will be a very demanding taskmaster. No beer and pretzels here. This is going to require an extremely high amount of study and practice over a very substantial amount of time if it’s to be done rightly, and I am absolutely rubbing my hands in anticipation of this.

And lastly, I want to make sure I take the time to give my future opponents a very spirited go of it! ;)

All the best to each and every one,

Yuri, it will change the DNS on your PC regardless of what DNS service you use does for that entry...

In other words, the site is still there but its but being referred to correctly?

Yep... the MatixGames site is still where it was but they forgot to renew the 10 year lease and new "placeholder" DNS propagated through Internet... many ISPs now have wrong IP address for www.matrixgames.com - the only "easy" way is to manually enter the correct IP address into your computer host table until all DNS for all ISPS resolve the issue...

Leo "Apollo11"

See, I would have never, in life, known you can do that. [&o]
