What is the difference between gray square of yellow-green square on the attached image?

If I recall, grey is time already used. Other color is additional time the battle will consume if everthing goes right for you. Depending on disposition of defender, condition of attacking units, terrain, mood of wife, phase of moon, it could take longer.

I hadn't played in so long, and even then I didn't study TOAW in depth that much.  I would have thought they were representative of time-slots.  But ROUNDS seems a little more descriptive of how the battle works.  I THINK!

Hey Obselete:  Here's a thread dealing with the attack planner you might find interesting:  tm.asp?m=2374945

It's a couple of months old or something but the information is relevent.

Larry, I remember some time ago you mentioned TOAW in your mind is the best war game ever made.  Or perhaps it was just your favourite.  I wonder do you still think so, or do you never take time off to study what else is out there?

I don't think I can force myself to get back into TOAW, though once in a while I browse around places like here for nostalgia.  I haven't heard the term BURN now that I think of it, since those ladder club days about a decade ago.  One of the first tricks I remember learning is taking a really weak unit, placing it in the way of your opponent, then putting it on ignore losses, just to cause your opponent to BURN off a whole precious turn to his surprise.  I don't know, didn't quite seem realistic.

Given the choice I'd still prefer Panzer General or ASL over TOAW.  Though I still have the manual sitting here on my desk.

When the next patch gets released you may want to give it another try. Some of those things may have been taken care of.

Um......when I'm waiting for Dave's moves sometimes I'll play an episode or two of Age Of Empires III I'm up to level 70 or so now. For what it was designed to do I think TOAW III is STILL the best wargame but I'll freely admit that I haven't played any other Matrix Games title so my opinion isn't all that informed. Maybe after Dave and I are through with our game ( we're on turn 167 now ) I'll have to buy another title or two and try them out just to say I did. And to become more informed. I'll especially try Advanced Combat or whatever it is called. That and maybe Panzer Division or something. And I'll post a full report.

Advanced Combat

I think you mean Advanced Tactics?

Very surprised you never played any other MG title.  Perhaps that explains some things.  I know a few grognards from way back moved onto other things and claim they wouldn't go back to TOAW since it' TOO SIMPLE for today's standards.  Which is rather amusing, since the other complaint I always hear is how TOAW is just TOO COMPLEX to get into.

My #1 problem was no TCP/IP.
