All-weather roads

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

All-weather roads

Post by Emx77 »

According to authors of book "When Titans Clashed", the vast expanse of the Soviet Union included only 40,000 miles of hard-surfaced, all-weather roads and 51,000 miles of railroads. I wonder why these roads are not represented on map?

Most of the so called "hard surfaced all weather roads" were a joke. What there was ran pretty much close to rail lines in most cases I believe so with the scale of the game as it is, no need to represent them as something different from the rail lines.

The Operational Combat Series offers excellent depiction of road net in large expanses of Russia, from main roads to tracks (it also depicts single and double track rail). Roads don't overlap rail network to the extent that Klydon suggests and road is, in my view, a major ommision from an otherwise excellent map.

Description of picture in a book I have

"...Pz.KwIII. on the largest and finest highway in the Soviet Union, the road from Minsk to Moscow. The road is unpaved..."

Look at how the roads have improved[:)]

The roads may not have been 'all weather' but in the dry seasons they represented key objectives and defined the axis of attack for AGN and AGC. I think that map is large enough to represent them (they were more numerous than the rail lines) and that outside the mud and snow periods, they should give some movement and supply advantages.

Why do you think the Germans got stuck on the roads in the first place? Because even a poor road is generally a better option than trying to go off road through forests and swamps...

This highway is located deep in Siberia, thousands of kilometers east of Moscow in low populated area.

Roads are virtually there. Hexes with better road network has "lighter" terrain.

Ok, I see that now. There are sort of 'clear' paths across the map. I didn't really spot that before :(

Sorry, but I can't see difference [:(]

Do these "roads" have any effect on supply or movement?

Something like this. Or no heavy woods in southern areas, etc..

Yes, lighter terrain less MP cost. Again they are the subject of decision of the person who made the logical map - me, i.e. subjective and don't have single interpretation in many cases. You are free to have different view on this as well.

There was a big discussion in the past regarding the roads and why they are not in the game (now only if forum search would work). It is not just matter of drawing some lines on map, the whole movement and supply system should be reworked, means not even months but years of extra development. In a perfect world they should be there together with dozen of new terrain types.. it's not forbidden to dream. [:)]
