2 day division prep for assault

Post by Marshal Villars »

Playing away here and set a US armored division's orders to assault on day one at about 0600. Game is on "partial" orders delay.

Took until about 2 hours to reach the FUP. No problem.

Took until the afternoon of day two for them to start moving.

Any thoughts on why?

I was not creating new orders constantly and creating new delays.

Note also, I have let the AI use default everything...I didn't even assign a formation for the attack (note the "?" is selected as formation).

Note also, I normally wouldn't just order a whole division around, but wanted to see if I could and once in a great, great while I do.

Screen shots attached...

Day 2. 0800 hours. Still no movement.

At first I thought it might be because I had taken artillery fire and they were reorging or some units were too exhausted to go. But I do have the "stragglers" box checked (left on default).

Day 2. About 14:20.

I think about 13:00 hours on day 2, I decided to assign the assault the "successive lines" formation. A little more "dancing around occurs". And then this. The sub commands get orders.

Finally something happnens. Not too much later (16:20--LOL), the first armored unit inches forwards.

Here he goes. The first armored unit is off. 34 hours after the order to assault was given. (note I am playing on "minor" orders delay).

Other units follow in the hour after this and by nightfall, elements have reached the objective...about 3 km away.

The main delay was due to you ordered the Commander to assault at 0-dark thirty but suggested they continue resting until daybreak (normal rest setting.) Your HQ looks pretty fatigued so they took you up on it.

If you wanted them to move out earlier try setting 'rest' to "min" or "none"... althought they may be pretty worn out by the time they get to the assault.

Since the objective looks to be held by scattered German companies, you might have had better results 'moving' a battalion or 2 into contact with the 'attack' toggle on. The Germans might have packed up and ran when they saw you coming on them at daybreak.

Thanks Sim. I thought it was me. As I am new to BFTB (though have bought and played HTTR and COTA).

I will review my "doctrine" then!

Sim...

What do you mean 0-dark thirty?
I did set the original order at about 0630 on Day 1 of the scenario. So, a whole day passed while they formed up (rather quickly) then just sat there. So, during the day, they didn't assault. These screenies are from day two. I didn't start doing screen shots until day two of my "issue".

By the way, you mention an "attack toggle"? LOL. What is that? I hate to say it, but I don't see it.

Having seen your screen shot above, which differes from the one in the other thread by displaying the task the units are doing in the Unit Info Boxes of each icon, it's clear that the force is resting. As I mentioned in the other thread even if you set the Rest option to None, exhausted units will react and rest. You just cannot expect that exhausted troops will carry an assault.

Well. Note that I took this advice from Simtovich into account and gave "no rest" orders so that I could get them to move. Maybe I should have done a screenie with their orders showing.

I will check the "2 day" regimental attack myself by loading it and checking their orders quickly.

Yes. I am new and expect problems and am grateful for the support.
