New Guy

Post by Wild »

Hi Guys,
I just bought the game and the expansion. It looks awesome.
I have a rookie modding question. Is it possible to or even i good idea to mod the game so i start in our solar system on planet earth.
Would this in someway ruin the storyline?
Sorry for the complete newb question. I'm going to have a blast playing this game. Thanks.

You can use the editor after you start a new game to rename everything in
your starting system to whatever you wish. You can place nine planets and
name them from Mercury to Pluto (or Neptune depending on your opinion of Pluto
being a planet). Name moons and also rename the star to Sol for the realism
affect it seems you are seeking Wild. Have a great time! [:)]

Also....renaming will not affect the storyline.

Thanks for the quick response.
I've been looking around the forum a bit and it seems quite friendly.
I've been playing War in the East lately, and it is hard to ask questions on that forum as people are so emotional over that game. I'm looking forward to just having some fun, and distant worlds sure seems to fit the bill.
Once again thanks, and i'm sure i will have more questions as i get deeper into this great game.

Welcome to DW Wild.

This is a good community. That is one of the things I enjoy about this game. [:)]

Welcome to Distant Worlds. [:)]

If you have any questions just ask away. If you plane on doing any modding, make sure you check out the customization guide. It's stickied to the design and modding sub-forum. It's not up to date with the expansion but it's a good place to start. [;)]

Thanks for the tip Igard. By the way, i have checked out your Star Trek mods. They are absolutely wonderful. Top notch work. I will definitely be playing those after i get my feet wet for a bit.

Just a note for if you do make a system using the editor, often there is already a Sol system in most games. This isn't anything bad but it could throw immersion off abit unless you delete it.

Second if the way the editor works. So far the only way I found to get planets that look correct is to spawn one then another and another and so on until you get the one with the right surface your after. Unless i've missed something there is no way to spawn one planet then cycle through its various textures, this isn't game breaking but it can be a real pain when making a full system. On occasions then when deleted the extra planets I find sometimes I get an error and I lose some of the mini map window etc and have to save and restart.

In addition, another workaround is to open the 'Systems' text file, search and find the line with the
"Sol" name and replace "Sol" with a seemingly 'unique' system name (such as XK-112) to try and
avoid another duplicate system name, then save the file.
NOTE! Be sure to backup the 'Systems' text file before modifying it, just to be sure! [:)]

Totally forgot you could do that it's a far cleaner and better way of dealing with the problem than I had been using.
