Me VS Oleg Beta 3 Restart No Oleg Please

Post by 2ndACR »

Okay, here we go with the 2nd round using the new patch. Now maybe the swamps won't be uber forts.

Okay, basic strategy, kill as many as I can and go as far and fast as I can.

In the North, I threw caution to the wind and blew the entire front wide open, routed anything in my way. I have 2 Panzer over the river.

Central

My standard first turn. Pocket in the south and near Minsk. No swamp this time, full armor up front.

South

A slight variation of the AGS first move. I sent 1 Panzer Corp to the south from 2nd Panzer Army to help blast the hole. I pounded anything that got in my way. Lvov has a weak pocket that might hold, but will be isolated next turn if not either way. Romanians should activate next turn.

Not sure I am a fan of that opening for AGS. He will get the big pocket back in supply rather easily and all 4 PG1 panzer divisions will be out of supply.

Good start with the rail repair guys north and center. Where are you going to get going at in the south? (That is one of the reasons I blow that one Russian division out of the rough, which should be easier now that the patch is in place).

That one Pz division one hex northwest of where it is saves the pocket. It's 4 hexes southwest of Rovno now, but needed to be one hex northwest of that.

One hex NW wont do it I don't think. Two hexes might help the situation a little in the south but as it is a large part of AGS is prone to multiple envelopments going as far back as the Polish border.I think the panzer unit east of Tarnapol is over-extended and may even be vulnerable if the Soviet player is brave enough to go for it.Although probably not with PZ GR 2 coming South.
Good to see you've got that armor across the Daugava in the north. It's a good spot for Soviet players to hold up AGN if it isn't done.

One will. It will ZOC the Tank Div and whatever is underneath it so it can't move two hexes.

I still must say I'm not fond of the move. If you don't intend to do the Q-ball full pocket extra PzDiv south move, then don't do an overextended Mynok Gambit.

Sorry if I'm overlooking something obvious here (I usually am), but as far as I can see the Soviet tank division only needs to move one hex in order to throw a ZOC over the hex west of that, then the mech division to the SW can do likewise and the four panzer divisions are isolated. The pocket to the NW can be reconnected in similar fashion and this then gets worse because you can do the same thing up at the Polish border isolating a further six divisions.
I'd be interested to know if anyone thinks there's a chance that either of the over-extended panzer divisions can be destroyed here. The one east of Tarnapol is begging for it.

No, you are right in that scenario as it stands. My point is that if the Pz div was one hex NW, your scenario no longer can hold.

Or maybe it can if everything can move one. It needs to be two hexes NW.

If he is going to try to jump a panzer division, the one east of Tarnopol seems to have the best chance with rail lines available north and south. The panzer division deep south would be even better (lot longer for other German units to come "save" it) but the Russians would have trouble getting units in there to get to it in time.

Safe play is put the panzers all out of supply and force the Germans to a crawl for at least one turn if not two in the south. Russian has a fair chance to get several units out of the Lvov pocket if he plays his cards right I think. The Germans will be able to get two of the panzer divisions back into supply with out too many issues, but there should be another break in the pocket right along where Tarnopol is and that would make it harder to get the other two divisions back in supply.

I could see going for that panzer division tho if the Russians pick up that the Germans will have very little (if any) infantry that will make it down there to help. All that would be available would be two panzer divisions that started the turn out of supply and the panzer division from PG2. The German infantry coming to the rescue are going to have to cross at least two Russian controlled hexes, which will suck down their movement and this is in addition to moving up other infantry to get rid of the Russian blocking units that reestablish contact to the pocket forming.

Given how Oleg played his last game (pretty aggressive) my bet is he tries some sort of offensive action.
