Two questions really...what happens to routed troops and is there any value in attacking them?

It is not possible to attack routed troops. They displaced immediatly as soon as a military unit go close to them, like an HQ or an Air base.

Each displacement cost them a lots of attrition looses..... So yes it is valuable.

Do routed units take some sort of hit when routing through enemy ZOCs? Like additional casulties and/or loss of equipment etc.? I keep seeing units that I have pocketed in a proper 2-turn pocket Rout through the cordon of units + ZOCs. This occurs from either a combat result after attcking the pocketed units or when a friendly unit moves adjacent to a pocketed unit.

I don't have an issue with units routing through ZOCs per se. I suppose it can be justified as encircled units slipping through gaps in enemy lines as they try to make it back to their own lines. But it seems like in so doing such units would have some probability of additional loss in manpower, heavy equipment/heavy weapons, etc.
