Opening turn 4 caused less of a shock for me than it might cause to Flavio.

Mud in the Europe zone, thus far I've had no help from the mud.

Only one of the unready divisions on the land bridge shattered. Another airborne brigade shattered, as well as a NKVD regiment. The pocket in the south was closed again, but no additional units were pocketed.

James picked a direction for his advance in the south: east for now. He can swing north or south next turn, or just continue east. It's a smart move, but it does mean the damage inflicted on my army is marginal. The flanks will pull back this turn. Vinnitsa was captured more or less for free, unfortunate but even a good Rifle division wouldn't have held long.

He has advanced 5-6 hexes in the center, 9 in the breakthrough area in the south, and only 1 or 2 hexes in the direction of Leningrad in the north. He has captured Tallinn, but I'm not really interested in when he captures places that are doomed to begin with.

My army's size increased by around 70.000 men. He won many battles, but the units in them were mostly not even close to full strength, so losses were OK.

Due to the 684 recon missions he flew, my air force didn't turn up for the ground battles, one of the reasons why there are mostly fighters on the map at the moment. An "intercept recon missions" toggle would be nice, as well as the AI not sending dozens of fighters to intercept 1 or 2 recon planes.

Interesting observation.

How are you handling your air force?

Interesting observation.

How are you handling your air force?

There are currently only fighters (not nearly all, though, about 3-4 per fighter air base, which leaves a lot in the national reserve) and some level bombers flying partisan supply missions on the map, as it would be pointless to place tactical bombers or short range level bombers on the map currently. They would just fly suicide missions as they would fly unescorted ground support missions.
I was unshocked by my turn 4.

I didn't really expect you to be shocked, but I thought maybe his move in the south was not as predicted.

He's still struggling to cause any real damage in both of our games it seems.

He's just doing more railroad raids. This is his MO. I'm content to let him do this. He hasn't yet committed himself to a real kesselschlact operation.

At one click per second this only a little more than 10 minutes and time flies when you are having fun; no?

There must be a point of diminishing returns for recon flights.

Thats a lot of recon missions

Does that much recon guarantee that you spot everything?

its more than one click a second, even with message set to 0 [:)]

He is flying those recon missions simply to mess with the soviet fighters

No, sometimes you need to a second recon.

No. A lot of it comes down to the terrain you are trying to recon. I have had multiple units be in swamps and not be able to spot them using recon. (I was playing both sides as a test). Don't take for granted forests and swamps are empty of units even if you have done recon on them or you might be in for a rude surprise. Clear terrain is pretty easy to pick out units however so that you at least know something is there.

I think he said in his AAR that a lot of those recon missions are automated. I can't remember exactly how he said he does it but they aren't all manual.

Hit F5 for recon mode, then click the AI button.

So what happened to this AAR? It was one of the 2 most anticipated and watched AAR's on the board. Is it dead? :(

No, I just haven't finished the next turn yet, the same goes for Flavio I believe. Both James and I have a limited amount of time to spend on turns for the next couple of weeks, so things slowed down a bit.
