True, there were tests that seemed to indicate this. If I recall correctly, the test only looked at pilots straight out of the pools, so very low experience. These mainly train very fast no matter the circumstances, so it is hard to see the extra effect the better leaders and other pilots give. If Michealm says there is an effect, there is an effect, though how big is hard to tell.ORIGINAL: jeffk3510

Training without plane time does not improve skills as much as flying.
The on-the-ground training happens indepently of flight training - skill is gained from leader and more experienced pilots so to speak. So can be less effective once pilot skills start to close on each other.
So to maimize training, you need to fly.
I have seen numerous posts that leader and more experienced pilots has nothing to do with how fast skill and exp are gained...??
I did some quick recent testing with effect of high exp pilot in fighter unit. To me, it seemed that there was no effect on exp gain, small effect on Air skill and bit bigger effect on Def skill.

made some quick testing with Japanese Rufe unit in 1000 mile War about impact of Veteran pilot in unit and training.
Unit was set to Training Escort 100%, 15k, range 0, run training 45 days. Unit average exp was set to 30.
23 pilots with No Veteran instructor improved their Exp 225 points, Air Skill 795 points and Defensive skill 508 points.
Then I restarted scenario and added 97 xp Veteran pilot.
23 pilots with Veteran instructor improved their Exp 227 points, Air skill 818 points and Defensive skill 550 points.
While this quick test is no way conclusive, seems to me that Veteran "instructor" had very little impact on Experience gain, maybe very small impact on Main skill trained and maybe some impact on Defensive skill improvement.
Those differences may just be inside the variables, so not really conclusive.
