RE: The Empire Strikes Back!

Post by PzB74 »

Didn't know about the Zeke upgrades C&G - thx [:)]
It almost sounds too good to be true, will be kinda hard for Allies to face only Franks, Jacks and George fighters in 44!

It will take some time to optimize the production line to sustain a major production of Jacks and Georges.
Already got a good amount of George and Franks in production but only 32 Jacks - but that's the inferior relative here anyway me thnks.

Yeah, the MTBs stuck on the production line has annoyed me for some time - I halt the boats when they get stuck on day 1.
So I shouldn't have any unneccessary production drains.

I asked Andy whether we could upgrade to the beta patch and he said ok and that he probably could live with it..
That's good sport even though we would have upgraded anyway when the patch goes public in x-xx days / weeks.

This turn bombers decimated a light tank regiment heading into the jungle east of Magwe.
Had planned to create a picket line as I'm kinda expecting Andy to launch a two pronged attack in this direction.
- Didn't know he had spotted us and the attacks were devastating.

Our fighters have just recently repaired damage and I set 100 fighters to CAP the tank regiment next turn.
Very possible that Andy will sweep it heavily, but his dividing his attention among multiple targets.

Nells hit a large troop ship near Luganville, looks like Andy is bringing in troops - need that to get an airfield started.
One of the biggest surprises this turn was the appearence of multiple TFs near Nuku Hiva, a CVE TF among them.
- Very likely a pending invasion.

Not much we can or want to do about that, but a limited reaction force has been alerted at Xmas Island!
No way I'm going to send KB into the vast expanses of the Central Pacific at this time: we need to protect the SRA and Burma first of all.

Actually it would be a good thing to engage Andy in a battle he thinks he can win, just like Zhukov at Stalingrad. If we feed in just enough troops
to delay and halt the Allies in Burma while building up strong reserves we may be able to lock them in another stalemate.

One of those "Andy´s". Why does he send a big troop transport like Mount Vernon to a frontline base he can´t really defend instead of using more smaller ones to carry the same load and unload in no time compared to the fat troop ship? I really start getting frustrated about these habits as it really is summing up over time. Booh booh once or twice, who cares, you got enough to play with, but constantly... [:(]

After a brief stay at Cape Town, 'Mount Vernon' skirted around the Cape of Good Hope, the tip of South Africa and set course north for Mombasa on the east coast of Africa. She arrived on Christmas Day and instead of finding the traditional snow and Christmas Tree, liberty parties found jungle colours in the over abundant orchids, with gardeners, basket weavers all at work in the streets. Animals were cheap and began appearing aboard ship. While one officer was standing his "officer-of-the-deck" watch, a monkey appeared on the quarter deck. Trying to be friendly, the OOD offered his hand only to see the monkey suddenly grab the hand with both fists and his teeth. However, the OOD didn't have time for disciplinary action as his sentry appeared with a horrified look on his face, pointing towards the dock. Upon looking down the OOD saw a sailor serenely ambling towards the ship leading his newest pet, a gigantic elephant.....

no wonder they got sunk, monkeys and elephants on board.... LOL

Maybe xAP was send for evacuation? If it was quick supply run, why do not use xAK, and no troops were reported lost.

Why actually not send KB there (and retake Luganville)? Allies seriously have no heavy warships to make invasion in DEI right now. Most are either sunk, or under repair.

Anyway, CVEs are pretty vulnerable. Some land-based planes (old VALs?) could deal serious damage, with TOJO escort. Assuming airfield are big enough. Aviation Support can always be transported quickly by air.

IMO, Luganville has already served it's purpose. those bases in SPAC are so far away they really only serve as a buffer and a delay for Allied invasions of more important bases.

Keep the KB out of sight and it will always be on Andy's mind.

Lol! Andy's Ark has come to Luganville in other words [:D]
Guess he's hauling with everything he got instead of waiting for suitable transports.
But yes, he shouldn't risk 20k ton liners without air support at a forward base. An influx of enemy LCUs has been spotted at Luganville now (3).

Nuku Hiva has air support for a whopping 8 ac..just a forward scouting base.
So I will send subs and small surface units as well as 9 Jills trained for low naval attack.

Luganville and Solomons will indeed only be diversions now, if Andy goes for Line Islands I could be tempted to send KB but yes, let's keep the carriers hidden away for now [:)]
Just upgraded all TBDs to the V2 Jill.

We also upgraded to the beta patch this turn!
Now this looks great [&o]

Suddenly 8 MTBs were released, most were shite, only 1 with top speed of 28 knots, the rest has a lousy 22 knot top speed.... [8|]
Lots of new buttons, options and improvements that will make life easier.

- It's finally possible to purchase destroyed LCUs for a few PPs. Most will be re-created within a month with a skeleton crew.

- Zekes can no upgrade freely to Jacks and Georges!
This can easily be overdone, so I will be realistic. A large number of A6M2/5 units will remain as training units.
A number of A6M5 units that are carrier trained or capable will be kept as reserve units for the KB.

I probably upgraded 3-4 Zeke units to George fighters today and 2 more with Jacks.
The units upgraded were mostly Zeke units deployed as interceptors in the SRA, NG and Burma area.
Zekes are lousy interceptors and replacing them makes sense.

My pool of George has shrunk from 200+ to 40 ac, of 100 Jacks some 30 remains as reserves.

Your radar at Magwe seems a little flakey. Only one 120nm detection I saw and recall. Have you got enough there?

Sitches to "Yes" will stockpile that item at that base.  VERY useful for oil/resource shipping.  Not working perfectly yet in k9, but Michael has it working for k10.

You do not need enough Aviation Support, for first few days (until planes begin to break, because of lack of maintenance), and against fighters, it will be probably only ONE strike, anyway [:)]

However, the small unit, can be used during Night Attack. With short range, maybe we finally see it fly?

Possibly Mynok, I'm rotating base force units around the Burma basin bases according to which ones are open for business [;)]
Will check and see if there's another mobile radar nearby...

Ok thx Pax!

True Inq, but what I expected happened this turn; enemy BBs bombarded and closed the place.
So the remaining ac have been returned to Xmas.

A bit surprise when the Nuku defenders survived the first attack by a large enemy force including a full Marine Div!
4 forts and 100% prep gave the small garrisons a strong AV modifier.
- Now Nuku and the brave defenders have done more than what was expected of them.

Also, you will get all those SSXs, you returned to pool, since they were stuck at 15 days delay. It is repaired together with MTBs.
ORIGINAL: PzB
Enemy troops were not 100% prepped and took heavy casualties coming ashore!
Damn! Half of division worth was disabled during landing. You should use it somehow...
Very strange composition of this invasion. It seems Andy is preparing to quickly conquer undefended bases in the area, by Para Drops.

What is your HI situation? In 1944 there is gigantic jump in pilot numbers, so better be prepared (or burn all HI before that, to minimize loses [;)]).

Wow PzB, you stopped all those troops with just a Nav Guard unit?

What will happen on those atolls were you have a regiment worth of troops deeply dug in?!

This JFB is drooling ;)

Well, a dug in 100% prepped naval guard unit against a <100% prepped enemy landing force can force a couple of days delay - but that's about it.
The key thumb rule is that battalion should fight battalions, regiments should fight regiments and divisions should fight divisions...
- In the long run the smaller force is doomed to loose with heavy casualties. So landing a 100% prepped division on an atoll with a dug in regiment the regiment will eventually loose unless
support is provided (air - sea - land reinforcements).

There's still something wrong with the "return to pool" function Inq, both midgets and MTBs returned to the pool just dissappear into cyber Pacific [:(]

Not much to report in the last few days: turns are slow as weather has been nice and both me and Andy got lots of things going on in RL.
We did bombard Akyab with a heavy surface group, no way to approach without getting spotted so no heavy casualties but I wanted to burn enemy supplies and disrupt as much as possible.
Hoped to catch bombers trying to hit the ships but nothing showed up...a few Beauforts today tangled with local ack ack.

Enemy is continuing to occupy Marquesas, otherwise very quiet - also in Burma. No heavy enemy 4E attacks either.
After our recent victories I'm quite happy to sit back in the rear of the web observing Andy hassling around, trying to come up with new schemes that we can ruin [;)]

I've been lurking for awhile, thanks for the informative and fun AAR, PzB.

Maybe I use them all wrong, but I wouldn't miss the midget submarines too much anyway. In my war I've sadly realized that the American Turtle from the Revolutionary War had better success than my 20+ Japanese midgets sleeping at the bottom of the Pacific. At least the Turtle penetrated the harbor... [:(]

Well, 15 days is 15 days. Lets wait another week, and see. Otherwise it will be bug report needed. I am sure I had SSXs returned in Guadalcanal, so it can be some error with production on.

Cearly Allies have TOO MUCH transports. Is it really near San Francisco? Who would waste ships to put pickets there? Is Andy afraid of KB raid on USA coast (not that it will be not worth, woth 2 CVs taking repairs in base [;)])?

Anyway, Allied number of sorties again is much smaller, than Japanese. Possibly most CVs are under repair.
Are those new Japanese CVs ariive with full complement of pilots?

Still no PT boats Inq...can wait a few more days.
Near and near, deep in the Pacific between West Coast and PH - closest base is probably San Francisco!

Yep, carriers arrive with full complements - unfortunately Shinano will arrive with a small air contingent, will be costly to find veteran pilots to flesh them out to 80+ ac.

Nice to hear from you JonReb, glad to hear that you enjoy the journey [:)]
Midgets ain't worth much, but it's a weapon and with luck you may put a high value ship out of commission for months.

Rather quiet turn; moderate bombing activities in Burma and SRA.
Yesterday we bombed Akyab for the second time, lighting fires and torching supplies.

- Only 4 more days to go before the CV Shinano arrives (a Taiho class in scen 2).
This will be a most welcome adition to the KB, the Taiho and Shinano will be a formidable CarDiv [:)]

Burma...

Lots of bombing, manoevering and feinting in Burma. Not seen a major show of LCU force yet, looks like a diversion.
I will only leave what troops are needed to garrison Burma; it was pretty weak for a while after the SRA counterattack.
- I'm building the flanks between Rangoon and Java now but I can't see that the enemy will pose a serious amph threat without LBA support in the
forseeable future.

Going to divide a division in 10 garrison units and place them in all exposed dot / bases with potential value for the Allies.
A 30 AV unit with a couple of forts in the jungle is enough to hold up a brigade for a few days.
