Tonight's teaser should be AGC

Image

As you can see Fiva Robinskied. I routed everything I could reach but that was hardly anything. Starting to see the beginnings of another defence line though not much sign of forts. We converted to 1.05 at the end of my turn so his fort building won't get any easier. I'm happy advancing on Moscow at 40 miles a week with 100 miles to go with 8 more turns of clear.

I didn't see any point in hurling the armour in to gain just 1 more hex at this stage ( and that's as far as they would have got beyond the inf) especially as some had been back refitting. They would not then have had much fuel for T10. I was pleasantly suprised to see several mobile divs back at full strength the turn after I moved them back. They are more use as a threat in being ([&o] Mahan), and are now a bit closer than they were but still within 10 hexes of supply head and low fatigue so I expect them to be 40+ mobility next turn after a shuffle forward in friendly terrain. As I have posted before, Germans can benefit from a little patience.

Top left of screen you can see bottom part of an aneurism in German front lie which seems to have quite a bit of cavalry in it. I spotted it and have sealed it off on 3 sides ( including routing a couple of units at the shoulders of the bulge) so we will see what he does. Advance his squishy little horses I hope, but do not expect.

I say every turn he can't retreat 4 hexes here every turn, and maybe I will be right this turn.[&:]

I've also been able to use the last couple of turns to get the support units into the right places so I haven't been totally lazy.

AGS?

Image

Well Fiva suprised me and beat back all my bridgeheads other that at E kiev city. Not something to take lying down. Eastward advance on Dnepr bend slowed as inf took over but gallant Rumanians stormed K Rog and retook Nikolaev.

Lvov pocket finally cleared and disinfected.

No factories left in D or Z towns. Major push across Dnepr led to lots of routing commies as you can see. Near Nikolaev 3 individual div divs each did 1 prepared attack vs a Russian inf div of about 13K men each. 2 routs and 1 shatter. To continue the nautical theme from my last post, his inf was as much use as Admiral Jellico's battlecruisers at Jutland.

casualties

Sorry - I'm not getting much/any better at this.

Russian casualties were just over 100k - down a bit due to his cowardly centre. Arty losses relatively a bit higher after I displaced 2 or 3 HQs.

Thought of the week

3 different defences in the 3 sectors have required different approaches. Fiva's lack of enthisiasm for stopping me rescuing Moscow from his foul clutches suprises me. Not a trap as far as I can tell. He's nowhere near my supply line and my flanks are keeping up. I don't care anyway. My glorious troops will continue their demonstration of Brownian motion whatever he does.

Particularly noticeable was that Russians now showing their true trust in their leader - 1st attack routs becoming more common which is good news. v1.05 will kick in for Fiva's turn and I don't suppose that will help him greatly.

He seems to have disproportionately strong forces in the south - especially compared to the centre. However my pressure north and south leaves it hard to see how he can do much to correct that this turn. Routed units may get back into line but they rout again at the 1st German saying 'Hande hoch', or even 'hande hoch bitte' as my well-mannered troops say.

I think he will have to abandon his counter thrust in the valdai hills area between AGN and AGS as it won't go anywhere and he need s the men to die elsewhere. I will be happy if he proves me wrong again.

I reckon I'm on target for all objectives I set out in post #10. Hard to guess how many factories I will gobble up but I have hopes of reasonable numbers given that Donbass Kharkov, Moscow and Leningrad all at high risk in next few turns and all have all their factories left. No doubt Fiva will start on these in his turn as Poltava is already empty.

Lastly we will be slowing down for the rest of Sept as Fiva has exams at the end of the month and I have a major trial.

In conclusion, it took generals hundreds of years to work out that the only way to prevent the enemy breaking their line was not to have one. Likewise Fiva can't upset my plan because I don't have one.

T10 AGN

Image

Pushing forward at the top and hopefully sealing the pocket. Combat shown is the one blowing commies off some highground. To get enough inf xx round meant shortening the trip. I therefore did hasty attack with 1 div only as step 1. Success -he retreated but did ( edit:NOT) rout out of pocket. That enabled me to get 3 div deliberate attack as shown - each div on their last 6 MPs. That cleared the way to attack and occupy hexes to NE and SE.

I may be pushed out of them but pocket should hold and I will be able will be able then to clear that quickly then to push forward against his tired attackers.

Sadly Fiva pulled of of his advance at bottom of the scren so that land has been claimed for Greater Germany.

Centre - the panzers roll - without HQ build up.

Image

Vyazma was only weakly held and fell at the 2nd attempt to our brave Landsers. I'm very glad it did not have 2 divs in as I would probably had to hve bypassed it which would have made for slower progress. Our troops poured through the gap and many strong units are now only 60 miles from Moscow. Will Stalin use his rail capacity to get his factories out or just himself?

2 mot divs planted themselves in the woods next to Kaluga to share the love with the HI and arms factories there. I hope they get to stay as they do have a lot of love for the factories. It's been many turns since I last got any.

I did think of going for Bryansk and the factories there but decided against for 2 reasons. First, there seemed to be a 2nd line from recce flights which made it too far. Second, Bryansk is the wrong way. I want good winter quarters. I was pleasantly suprised to get to Kaluga though.

Both Leningrad and Moscow drives looking good.  How are your transports holding up with their resupply efforts?

Thanks Carnage. I hope you say the same about my south when I post it [:)]

I lost a lot of transports early on up North due to negligent failure to protect some airfieldson T3, otherwise they are fine.

Germans should also max out use of bombers as transports at the start of the turn ( or at least before any ground attacks) as they probably deliver more than the transports

AGS

Image

1st use of HQ build up has 2 Pz korps launched into the middle of nowhere. Fiva had retreated a few hexes but I still got through his first 2 lines and have not seen a third. Sadly he had a div in front of Kharkov so my attempted love bomb did not get to first base with his factories. Maybe Fiva is too young to understand lurve properly. Oh well, he needs to spend 160K of rail points to spend if he wants to get the rest out ( + the SU2s which don't really count).

11th Army has closed up to lower Dnepr, routing a few rabble that got in the way and Chernigov fell without a fight. Flanks covered off as Fiva's cowardly retreat extends acros the area of operations.

Where there's no combat, I advance to try to capture as many population points as possible. Stopping Commies breeding is as good as killing them (actually better) and I think every point produces about 40 or so men per turn. Anyone know the correct figure?

Tx B. Neither SS div is in clear terrain ( woods and town) and I'm not sure how much he has close enough to counterattack - without risking the counterattackers anyway.

historical weather - I would never play random with current rules.

As for the SS - come play with my SS wolves if you dare. Actually you would think they were very laid back although a bit stand offish if you met them in the park. They play nicely with other dogs but not with strangers.
Just keep salivating and waiting for my spring offensive.

Casualties

Image

Not a great turn for casualties. Only 4 units killed: the surrounded inf x near Leningrad, an arty SU and a tank xx and a/b x. Last 2 shattered which is always pleasing. Agian high Russian arty losses from having HQs overrun.

After his attrition I will still be ahead of my 200K Commie casualties per turn target but this is the first time I have had to rely on attrition. 1500 short at the end of my turn[:(] Leningrad pocket needs to hold if normal service is to be resumed next turn.

Just curious, why would u like fixed over random weather? I like random especially as the german because it prevents soviet foreknowledge of what the weather will be for the germans. Plus imagine the surprise of the russians when they open their turn 18 and instead of mud it is snow instead.
Or a little dose of clear weather in november in the south zone on turn 19. Of course blizzard early in november can be a downer but ....

Random weather can be nice, unless you are playing JAMIAM who has magical weather abilities. On turn 4 at least one crucial zone will be mud, and later breakthrough by the germans will result in a mud turn in new place.

(In reality, random is nice for the Germans during the spring of 1942 especially, the chance to breakup the mud-clear-mud phases means that the Soviets can't do outlandish things knowing the next turn mud will save them from a beatdown.)

I've used random weather twice and have had Jerry quit on T3 and T4 respectively when stuffed by mud.

I might try again if German insisted ( ie did not quit in the summer) or if random became less extreme as has been discussed at length on other threads. I would not play as Germans with it. The experience is too stressful even with fixed weather[:'(]

Random weather needs some fixing, IMO; it should be a bit less random. It shouldn't snow in May, for example.

If it's fixed, we really should have random weather, to prevent the Soviet clear-mud exploit

Wow, your southern punch looks like a HEAT round exploding against that evil commie armor plating. [:D]  Interested to see Fiva's counter moves to that one.  Which direction you planning on going?  Toward Stalino perhaps if you can get the panzers the fuel?
