Hi all,
ORIGINAL: AW1Steve

I honestly think the majority of forumites can pass this test. And that includes those who are not Americans. I'd bet money T can![:D]

http://news.yahoo.com/video/whoknew-ame ... 00812.html

4 out of 4. But all the answers are in the text block above the questions, so that's not saying much.

Same here... BTW, I only had to think harder about order of the first four US presidents... [;)]

I also agree with Kristian that having 4 possible answers below the question (i.e. 1 correct and 3 false) makes this very easy - if you have at least some knowledge you can always find the right answer from it... the sad truth is that education level has fallen almost everywhere... <SIGH>

I wasn't referring to the multiple choices, but the text block above them. If you read that, all the answers are there.

That "quiz" doesn't test historical knowledge, but ability to read.

But that said, I knew 3 of the 4 answers in advance. Forgot that John Adams was Washington's successor...

Some practice tests (unofficial and with some odd wording)
http://www.theuktest.com/life-in-the-uk-test/1

I found an error in the very first question.
Vindolanda is not PART of Hadrians Wall. It is a supply fort situated a few miles back from it (and in fact predates the wall).

Having visited that site for over 30 years (most recently this summer), I am pretty sure of this.

I'm not emigrating anywhere any time soon.

When you do, you should consider Newark, New Jersey. It is a lot like Denmark.

Let me guess, you've never visited either place?

I've been to both, I was guessing you hadn't been to Newark. [:D]

Math is a major problem. At work I have had to teach more than one technician how to do basic triconometric function, like sin or cos value and Pythagoras. These guys are supposed to be able to read technical drawings, but are lost when there is a central angle and diameter drawn in there.

Once explained, the comments are usually "Oh, is that all? Why didn't they teach this at school?"
To which I am always tempted to answer "They did, you just weren't listening."

With history, I agree with Goethe; "He who can't make account of last three thousand years, is living fron hand to mouth."

Just curious, which part of Denmark did you visit? Because there's not a lot of them that are as fucked up as Newark.

I was suggesting that you could, not that you should. [:D] It's good to always have options. [:)]

He was the only one you had trouble with in the "Declaration" music video too. I personally just think you don't like the guy. [:D] He was always one of my favorite founding fumbling fathers as he was a true geezer. [:D] I like that in a person. [:D]

I'm betting that it was Copenhagen that you went to. T himself was disparaging that city just last week. Unfortunately I've been to Newark. That and Patterson are probably on my short list of worse cities I've been to. Never been to Denmark, the closest was to Greenland , one of it's territories. That would be like claiming to have been to the USA when all you've visited is Guam. Or Puerto Rico . Probably not an accurate view. [:D]

Got them all right despite the best efforts of the public education system. I am convinced I passed my civics class because I knew more about the subject than the teacher.

This as all supposed to be tongue-in-cheek, but now we are all serious!

My "trip" to Denmark was part of a NATO sponsored exercise in the mid-1980's. I was at two bases and the surrounding areas for a few days. I don't recall much of the first one, or its name. It was an airbase and we were there RON, but just barely; in at dusk and out at dawn.

The second base was way in the north. A naval/army reserve base in a town called Fredrickshaven or something like that -- sorry, but memory dims after a few decades. I remember cold and fog. In town we ate some local fish dinner that, unfortunately, I recall as absolutely awful. Then the Danish officers and us went out and drank too much and looked for gals with flexible ethics in the evening -- unsuccessfully as I recall. I was there a couple of days. I also went to Norway and Iceland during this timeframe -- never been back to any of these areas since, but have a generally favorable impression all the way around.

Probably not the best tour of Denmark; however, my limited memories of Denmark far exceed the experience of smelling and seeing Newark. [:)]

You were at Naval Station Frederikshavn, then. Not around any more... The first one was probably at Karup Air Base.

Much more than that.

I'd wager 75% of US HS students couldn't find Minnesota on a blank map. OTOH, I've run into Minnesotans who think there is a state called "Carolina." They don't realize there are two, like, you know, same as "Dakota."

My mother emigrated from Canada in the mid-50s and to the end of her life was still explaining that she was from B.C. and no, she didn't speak French.

I have a degree in American History with a minor in Byzantine History and consider myself pretty knowledgeable on the subject of history in general. That said, I could not get the order of the first four presidents (actually missed Madison entirely). This raises the question, does it really matter in the long run? My only real concern with new citizens is that they be law abiding and respect the fact that there is an opportunity for them to both enhance their lives and the lives of their fellow citizens here. If person comes to my country and makes a contribution perhaps a talented musician or artist, a lawyer or engineer or just an energetic shopkeeper or laborer then I don't mind if they do not know what the Louisiana purchase is.

My New England upbringing makes it easy for me to remember Madison . The War of 1812 was so unpopular there that it was called "Mr. Madison's War". [:D]
