This game is tough..

Post by GBS »

Or possibly its just me. Played the first tutorial and started it over a few times. Did OK in the AAW segment as I downed 8 Migs and lost 3 Tomcats doing it. Next I planed the SEAD mission as suggested and ran into trouble. I chose 4 Corsairs I think that were loaded with the Shrikes. They launched their Shrikes from far out and I watched as every missle missed. The four planes continue flying directly to the target area and are one by one shot down by an unseen source. I formed another SEAD mission and the same thing happened as the missles all missed. This time I gave the RTB order to the group and they turned back but still lost one more.
Questions -
Why dont the Sead groups turn back to base after firing? I do have the RTB at Winchester checked.
Why are the Shrikes so inaccurate?
If I plan several land strikes at different targets, do I have to delete all RPs and add new ones for each mission? Are the different RPs saved for each mission?

ALSO, I HAVE HAD THE GAME FREEZE UP (lack of a better discription) TWO TIMES AND HAD TO QUIT WITH THE TASK MANAGER. I do not see an auto save available when restarting even though I have that option turned on.

Any advise?

The thing that makes Command 'tough' is that there's such high fidelity to real-life performance. This means that real-life tactics will work well but there can be precious little margin for error at times. There are times you need to jump in and make adjustments that an AI in this type of complex environment, may have trouble doing.

Jam the SAM sites with the Prowlers. Perhaps use the active radar on the SEAD flight.

Actually, I increased kills by having the radar active in BARCAP flights in mission editor when I add the mission.

yes, i have had a one off freeze in this mission too and found it damn hard - pretty hard for a tutorial, but at the same time it makes me want to go back and play it over and over to try out different strategies - this seems to be a good thing about the game.

I lost 10 tomcats in a one go on my 2nd attempt.

I am pleased with seeing how ECM and Radar work in this game, as in harpoon it so often didnt do anything and sometimes was just plain not working inexplicably.

When the Shrikes fire aren't those planes basically Winchester? Shouldn't they RTB if it is checked in the ROE?

They still have their CBUs, but wont use them. I don't know why.

CBUs have a low-altitude release restriction. The AI usually sticks to optimal cruising altitude until it approaches a target, then changes altitude to use the weapon. Given that the PRIMARY weapon for the SEAD a/c was Shrikes, I wonder if the AI is staying at high altitude (where a Shrike would work) but then can't drop a CBU (which needs a low alt).

Split the SEAD flight in two...

One low pushes towards the SAM site.... The second stays high and far... and fire it's Shrike when the FCR come hot....

Now the AI has to choose: or shut down the FCR, thus permitting the first SEAD flight to get close and use the CBU, or keep illuminating the incoming flight and been hit by the shrikes....

Battle of Dong Hoi-Minor Victory- U.S.S DLG Sterett put up one heck of a fight. Battling major fires and flooding.  Thought she was going to bite it with the fires, but she got e'm under control.  Shot down, 4 Migs.  U.S.S OKC to the rescue.

All heading back to Subic Bay for R&R and Medals.
