From the view point of a U.S. Navy......

Post by Malakie »

I am a United States Navy Service Connected Disabled Veteran and not only that, I served with and was part of the STANAVFORLANT fleet at one time.

Having now played 'Command', I do like the attention to detail, I DO like the micro-managing if you so desire (the more detail the better in my opinion) and there are a number of other things I also really like...

However there are a few things that could be changed.. First, I want to say that IF something can be done and I just missed how to do it, then please let me know...

Others have already covered the interface and timing etc so I will not bother re-hashing those..

1) P3 Orions and ASW aircraft need the ability to set up patrol zones AND select the type of drops they make during the patrol, where in the patrol zone AND what kind of drop.... i.e. sonabouys, line plus direction, box, zig etc...

2) Ships and subs also need patrol zones. Additionally they need the ability to use only certain weapon types on certain target types. I.E. you may need or want to fire SM3 missiles at ships or perhaps use a weapon in a manner not normally found.

3) I have found that sometimes I try to ready some aircraft at a base or ship and I am unable to select or use them for some reason even though they show up in inventory.

4) Air Defense for land based locations.

5) Formation editor... set up auto-patrol zones with mission. Much like found in the original Harpoon game.. that way ships can auto launch helos or other patrol aircraft on their own, refuel as needed and launch replacement birds for those crashed or shot down without human interaction.

6) Ability to select INDIVIDUAL ships in a task group and independently control them, add them to fleet or separate them to new fleet and issue orders. If this can be done, I have not figured out how on the main map.

For the moment, that is it. I have more but for now, those are the critical things I found right away. I am one that sincerely hopes the devs will stick with this game and continue to enhance and develop new features, capabilities and more in the future.. We really need an honest full blown GOOD detail modern naval warfare sim and 'Command' could just be the beginning of that finally!

Take it light...

Malakie - first off, thank you for your service and it's good to have you aboard!

I'm an incurable micromanager, too. My first question when finding out about Command was "Can I give commands to units while the game is paused?"... [:)]

Several things you bring up are either in the works or are already present. There has been long and interesting discussions on maritime patrol aircraft, sonobuoy pattern and granular control over mission activities. Let address the following question a bit ...
6) Ability to select INDIVIDUAL ships in a task group and independently control them, add them to fleet or separate them to new fleet and issue orders. If this can be done, I have not figured out how on the main map.

There is a lot of flexibility in doing these types of operations in Command. You can give commands to specific ships in a Group by hitting KEYPAD-9 (which shows all individual Units, even those in Groups) and then selecting the ship(s) you want to give commands to.

Often if I'm going to be doing independent maneuvering with a given ship in a Group I will select it and hit D to detach it from the Group before assigning it a new course or speed. The reason I do this is that a Unit in a Group is given a Station to keep and suddenly giving it disparate commands to the heading/speed of the Group is pretty chaotic. Just break it off and do what you need to do with it. You can later rejoin it to the group (select it and the group and hit G) and assign it a station.

You can also Detach a ship from a Group and assign it to a mission in a RP Box that is anchored to the original Task Group. So if you want a Knox-class FF sprinting and drifting in front of your convoy, just detach it from the convoy, create an RP box out front that is Anchored to the convoy then assign the Knox to an ASW Patrol inside that box.

RP = Reference Point. An RP BOX is a set of 4 RPs that creates an area within which a Mission can be assigned. To tell you the truth you can use 1 (single point) or 2 (line) RP sets for Missions as well, though that may be limiting for some operations.

Those RPs can be ANCHORED to a friendly GROUP so that they move about in a relative manner with that group. This relationship can either be FIXED (ie if the RP BOX is north of the Group, it will always be north of the Group) or RELATIVE (if the RP Box is to the left of the Group it will always be on the left of the Group).

I believe these are aircraft on bases or ships that are "broke down"
4) Air Defense for land based locations.
There is tons of SAMs and AAA (I might go as far to say, anyone that has ever reached operational service, and if its not there, the dev team is great and would probably add it)
