Interception
Except in the USSR, everywhere the Germans can intercept Allied ground strikes, they must feel the inadequacy of fighting at a disadvantage. Nevertheless, in an effort to stave off disaster, fight they must.

Wherever the Germans intercept, the Allies and Soviets send up their own interceptors. The Allies are able to always fight on the advantage. The Soviets... not so much (although their single-engine fighter does have an edge over the German twin-engine fighter).

The interceptions in Belorussia.

Air Combats

In a reverse of a prior air combat over Rumania, the USSR shoots down the German fighter, while its bomber is cleared through.

In the air combat over German HQ von Rundstedt, the Allies chase the German fighters away, ensuring all their bombers get through.

The Germans score some damage, unfortunately to a cheap carrier plane. And they don't even kill the pilot.

Disaster piled on disaster for the Luftwaffe as their fighter squadron fighting over Rome is destroyed.

The air combats this ground strike phase have cost Germany three fighter squadrons and one pilot crew and have cost the Allies a single carrier plane squadron.

I should note, so as not to forget, that the only rail move the Allies perform is to move an engineer division from the US east coast to the west coast.

And for the uninitiated, the word "squadron" is not being used in the specific sense here. Each of these air units (in the late war) represent up to 500 aircraft, and not all of the same type as depicted.

I ended up finishing up the impulse last night and whew! did it ever take a lot of time.

To cut down on some reporting time in future I'm going to take screenshots of theatre/sector by theatre/sector results of important missions.

For this impulse (which will probably be one of the longest in the game - till next summer, anyway) there was a lot going on and I documented it all as I went.

Glad to see you are back at this and I am very much enjoying all the action. Late game action doesn't happen all that often simply because one side or the other quits at some point in mid game.

The Ground Strikes

The Chinese hit with their ground strike, which will make their land combat enormously easier.

The Red Army Air Force and artillery barrage in Belorussia goes "whiff". Gunner training will be mandated.

An artillery barrage in the Carpathians is "on the money" (a 5-factor bombardment can reasonably expect to disorganize one out of every two defending units).

But that bombardment was the only success by the USSR in this step, as another strike fails miserably - this one hoping to pin the expensive mechanized corps in place for future impulses.

The raid on Marseilles is a flop (although not unreasonably so - the plane had but a 20% chance of hitting).
