I wasted money

Post by MemoryLeak »

I just bought this game. The manual is useless. I have no idea how to even begin playing. Tooltips are useless to me. I need something to study and refer to. So here is another one to put on the shelf. I can't believe you would publish a game without an instruction manual. That is really cheesy.

You should have read the forums..this has already been mentioned. I also made a mistake and bought a game recently and wish I hadn't, though my issue was the actual game itself not the lack of manual. Others seem to be doing OK.Instead of shelving why not ask some questions. Otherwise you are wasting your money.

I agree a game manual should have been included. That said I'm picking up the game without too much trouble. My first bit of advice, based on my experience, is don't stop expanding as long as there is land to settle. The AI sure will not. Also don't be overly belligerent as the other factions won't like you much. You also might consider turning off science victory unless that is what your are trying for.

Like Wodin said, if you have some specific questions ask them here. If you've ever played a 4x games, then it is really easy to pick up. If not, I'm sure a few helpful hints from the people on these boards will get you flaming bugs in no time.

Yeah I know I paid for those patches for cmbb and cmak and that new cmx2 one in the desert because it wasn't compatible with the Battlefront one. That one was only a $1 though but those for Cmbb and Cmak were $5 a piece (couldn't even give us a deal and both for $5 had to be separate). Battlefront as a company and people persons suck. Matrixgames and Slitherine are the best. At least they let you gripe about the games and their prices. lol

Well my wargaming hobby would have a huge hole if Battlefront weren't around. I also haven't bought or paid for anything I didn't think wasn't worth the money from there either. The East front title is my most looked forward to wargame.

Anyway this is a Pandora forum so sorry for going off topic.

This game's development really was ridiculously rushed, it would appear. I read what the game's writer said on RPS about how little time he had to actually write anything, and wasn't able to test his writing in game to see how it worked in context.

So I guess they didn't have time to write a manual either.

Here's an crazy idea for the developers: next time, actually finish your game before you start selling it?

(P.S. Another Conflict of Heroes victim here, played about an hour and dropped it...)

I'll post my comments here because I believe they are pertinent to the topic.

I have two main issues with this game.
The first and most important is technical. So far I have only managed a few game because of the frankly excessive amount of the technical issues of the game. Black screen, old fashion freezing, lagging... you name it.
I would have no issues with a few bugs on a freshly released game, it's absolutely normal, but there has been zero product support so far. I have received invaluable help from fellow gamers, but not even an email address to send my data files to. Posting them on a forum maybe good... if someone followed it up even by just saying "We took notice, thank you for your time".
The second is the learning curve is very steep but once you are on top of it... the game's pretty much over. Tweaking with other faction's (including aliens) aggression adds a little longevity but once you understand the few basic tricks (lots and lots of military units, resource and city management and using the randomized tech tree to your advantage)... it matters to a point.

I am not saying the game is bad but, to be honest, I expected a little more longevity out of it.

The reason you THINK that it's absolutely normal for a game to have bugs on a freshly released game is because you have been brainwashed to believe that. There is absolutely NO reason for there to be bugs and flaws in a newly released game if they PAID people to test games like they should. I just will not pay for production anymore in the same way I used to in the past. Waiting seems to be the better option nowadays as you can get fully patched and working games for $5 most of them anyways. Matrixgames and Slitherine and Shrapnel and Battlefront are about the only holdouts left that maintain high retail prices on most stuff they sell, but even they are starting to reduce prices on some of these ancient games they sell. $60 to me is ridiulous for Steel Panthers General edition, but, I suppsose to a new gamer to the genre it's worth it. The graphics alone would turn me off today for that price for the game.

Have you posted on the technical support forum for the game? Also, try the Slitherine forum as that is much more active. The developer seems very active in releasing patches, and I'm sure if you posted as above you would get rapid assistance. For the record, and this is not to diminish your issues at all, I've had zero technical problems.

Edit: I see you posted on the technical forum yesterday evening.

Why do that?

It's the same publisher.

For the life of me I don't understand why they have two forums when it is the same publisher and same people.

Even the forum structure is identical.

I'm surprised somebody would write this. I don't understand the difficulty in learning this game, with the exception of how a few specific items work.
