T121 - Rifle Corps

Another milestone has been reached. My first 80 morale rifle division. This one has been groomed since June 42.

T122 - Mud

First turn of mud. I am still attacking just as long as units are not entrenched or regiment sized. Some of the odds I am getting are astounding. Also interesting is the one combat against a regiment in level 2 fort which barely succeeded.

I also don't put the Russian air force in reserve which helps a lot. I think the air war is really important in this game.

I also attack during mud in my Axis game using the same approach. Air bombardment, no forts and numerical superiority.

I am trying to soften the pocket with artillery. This is the first time I am trying this. I just want to see what happens. First of all, despite the Held result the artillery divisions don't seem to lose morale. Fortification level is reduced very slightly and the units in the pocket use up supplies and CV goes down.

I move infantry around the pocket. The tank corps are moved away as they will be redeployed.

Just curious -- would you have formed that pocket east of Vilnius if you didn't know that mud was coming the next turn?

Edit: That rifle corps you highlighted is terrifyingly awesome. The best of the best.

I would have risked it for sure. Because at this point it would be quite difficult for the Axis to move three tank corps in light woods. CV of that stack was 74 without forts. But I think in future games I will insist on random weather. It just makes the game more interesting and unpredictable.

I'd agree with this, it adds that degree of uncertainty to planning which makes the game so much more fun.

You do seem to have the sort of concentrations that mean you can seal off a pocket unless its on the sectors where Stef has his very best units?

I am still able to fight a couple of battles in mud. I also continue to bombard the pocket with artillery and air strikes.

Plans are in motion now. The southern front will be heavily reinforced in two sectors. I have also just build another tank army which I will be send further south. This will allow me a two prong attack on Army Group South. Tanks are put on rail lines in swamp so that they are hopefully invisible to the enemy recon planes.

At the same time I am still pushing at Kiev. The pocket there is almost closed making it hard for the Axis troops to retreat.

I am envisioning all the mechanics of the entire Romanian army trying to fix that damn tank. [:D]

Numbers are so overwhelmingly in favor of the Russians that there is no reason to wait for clear weather.

T125 - South

A gigantic force has been assembled in the south. 7 fronts and their respective air armies will participate in this offensive that has only one goal: The destruction of Army Group South.

I didn't count properly but I believe there are 19 Tank Corps, 18 Cavalry Corps and 2 Mechanized Corps involved.
