Both sides decide to stay for another round and roll a three. The carrier planes engage one another above the ocean. Fighter and bomber roles are decided by the Japanese:

Air to air battles with carrier planes are often fought to the bitter end, since one does want to prevent to have carriers destroyed with the planes on them if one can. Also: their might not be a carrier waiting anymore...

The Japanese bombers receive anti air fire, destroying one of them:

The Japanese anti aircraft fire is also quite effective:

The Japanese pilots, seeing that there are planes on the deck of the Hornet, decides to target her:

Of course, the American pilots aim for the Shokaku, whose deck is filled with planes too:

Next, both sides carefully examine what is left for possible use in a next combat round. Admiral Halsey decides to sail away as fast as possible, since he is almost out of carrier planes:

The Ranger aborts to Adelaide (since he is sailing alone). Admiral Halsey orders his fleet to abort toward New Zealand. A Japanese SUB commander in the Tasman Sea shouts “Banzai” and rolls a 1 (!). Halsey is unlucky and rolls a 10(!). However, when choosing the combat type, the Japanese commander picks the wrong type (submarine) instead of surface (I pressed the wrong button, allowing the Yorktown to escape). The commander and his crew commit seppuku after this disgrace...

In the South China Sea, Japan doesn't want a combat happening, but the Allies of course do. But it proves to be a big ocean again (Allies 6, Axis 5). Finally, in the Sea of Japan, Soviet SUB's search for the Japanese merchantment. Japanese NAV patrol the Sea area, but the commander presses forward the attack. Allies roll 3, Axis roll 2. Japanese naval bombers attack:

In the Soviet Union, the Luftwaffe is again faced with being out of reach from important parts of the front. Therefore, the focus switches from the southern part to the northern part of the frontline. A Stuka groundstrikes Soviet positions. Being outgunned 2-1 in FTR's, the Soviets decide not to intercept:

The Reichsmarschall receives reports of large number of bombs turning out to be malfunctioning...
German troops are railed towards Leningrad. More troops are entering Morocco and in Egypt, Guderian improves the positions there.

South of Kuybishev, von Monstein personally directs an attack involving a lot of German mobile units. The Soviets realises that this is it. The Luftwaffe flies in two FTR's for ground support and the Soviets decides to throw in ground support to. A dog fight takes place over the Russian Steppes:

Shame on the naval action, but that is the way it goes sometimes. Good turn for the most part for the Axis. Lot of Japanese planes chewed up, but no carriers gone. It could have been far worse in a sense that the Japanese fleet has a glass jaw; once it goes down, there isn't any replacing it.

Russians are really in a bad spot. Their line is in danger of being rolled up from the south and they could lose another HQ depending on what happens before the end of the turn. If they try to run away again, the Germans can just crush what doesn't get away and slaughter some more Russian units in the open.

That glass jaw is also the reason why I've been building a lot of CV's by the Japanese. I've got the build points to do so (with China conquered and the Soviets on the ropes). That's normally something the Japanese can't affort to do...


September/October 1942, Allied impulse number 3:

The USSR, CW and the US take land actions. France passes.

The Red army tries to salvage the situation. Well, if you can call this salvage? It's the best they can do at this moment:

The Wallies are still having problems getting enough troops and planes in the area's in which they oppose the Axis. So they are unable to advance. There aren't enough reserves around to take losses. So they keep trying to improve positions, get more planes and men on the ground and divert as many Axis units as possible out of the USSR. But is looks like it isn't enough. The Luftwaffe and the Aeronatica Regina rule the skies over large portions of the frontlines. Sure planes are being build, but it will take a while before they arrive at the frontlines.
