6 out of 10 is not stellar. Great beginning, dead mid game, lacking in some areas, going to need some mods and/or expansions, the 2 professional reviews both agree on these points.

It does appear relatively bug free, which is a huge plus. But I am done buying games just because the look cool. I'll hold off a month & see what folks say after the newness has worn off.

These are the reviews from gamers, much more reliable than the so called "professional reviews"...

In Metacritic users reviews are excellent.

PS: I don´t believe in "Professional reviews" since they are usually written by professional mercenaries. [:D]

I'd exercise a little caution on that. There's not a lot 'reliable' about reviews of a grand strategy game from people who have barely logged enough hours to complete the tutorial let alone experienced the parts of the game the IGN guy was unhappy with, which is the case with most of them. And while I hate to mention fanboys, it is Paradox..

That aside, I've found it a pretty enjoyable experience so far, although I haven't got that far into it yet, either. Much easier to pick up than DW and most others, race customization is terrific albeit largely cosmetic, research and planetary management easy to figure out albeit not particularly inspired, and everything seems to work as it should. Very undemanding system wise as well. Just as an experiment I stuck it on my linx tablet (Intel Atom Z3735F @ 1.33 GHz and Intel integrated graphics) and it runs just fine as long as you set the multisampling to zero.

Going back, though, it doesn't seem to me to be the 4X tour de force 'overwhelmingly positive' might suggest. I tend to agree with guy who said it 'feels thin', although also that expansions will inevitably thicken it up somewhat. To be fair, that's pretty much the norm with these type of games in recent years with Endless Legends being about the only exception I can think of. Overall, though, on my limited experience I'd say go for it. There seems enough to pass the time until Endless Space 2 and DW2 come along, anyway. It takes the Paradox method into space smoothly enough, although perhaps the pure space 4X fan is still likely to get more out of DW, Galciv 3, or the decidedly under-rated Polaris Sector.

As an admitted Paradox fanboy I couldn't help myself and bought it. So far its an enjoyable experience, not totally amazing but there are a lot of good things going on. The anomalies and research system are way better than, say, GalCiv. On the other hand the ship design is really barebones, at least at first. At three hours into a campaign I'm still using the exact same combat ships as I started with.

I can see myself playing it a lot in the future, especially once it gets some more complexity. HoI4 looks to be a lot more complete out of the gate, really looking forward to it.

I really like where the game is going, but the stutter bug is driving me crazy. Luckily, the beta patch helps, but when I put the game on the fastest speed it still stutters pretty bad. Oddly enough, I get 144 FPS with it dipping down to 130 FPS every now and then. I'm tempted to install Linux, since this issue appears to only affect windows systems. Beside this issue, I like the game, and I can't wait to see what DLC is released.

I like it so far. It will be great after some patches and DLCs no doubt. Distant Worlds is still the King tho..

I've put some time into it (about 4 hours so far).

The main thing to me is that this is the most accessible Paradox GS game I have played. I've watched some youtube games, but besides getting use to the UI (I'm in the camp of not liking having to use a keypress to zoom out to galaxy view) it's pretty good.

It could (and I expect it will) use some depth in places - internal diplomacy is non-existent from what I can tell. Trade is relatively week (it's your typically 4X trade give me X and I'll give you Y, nothing like DW where you can set up trade stations...which I think this game would be perfect for if there was a little more depth in currency).

The empire generation system is great. Exploration is good to great. Random events and the ability to research tech after a battle means there's usually something to do. Combat is a little weak, not too much strategy from what I can tell so far and it seems too fast paced to have that ability. Strategy seems to be built more chess-like where you need to know when to attack, when to press the attack and when and where to retreat to.

Oh and slavery seems OP...at least right now. From what I heard they had to turn off rebellions so we'll see if they fix it.

I got it and I loved it, the only things you gotta worry about is keeping your people happy and if you are a war monger, get ready for a lot of force peace that cost influences. They are still trying to improving it and these two games are best grand strategy, distant worlds and this one.

Good to know. Polaris Sector is also worthwhile. It will probably be 50% off next week [;)]

GalCiv3's been kind of boring, and dlc hasn't helped. Stellaris will be a dlc farm. But got it for $30 at GMG yesterday.

Don't even want to think what DW cost me with all the add-ons. Love that in-game editor, though.

Polaris Sector isn't too bad, good tech trees, but poor system design. Usually have three to four planets. Just doesn't feel right.

I will for the "game of the year Edition" or how it will be called, cheaper price and including all DLCs. The DLC madness really annoys me

I am building a Star Trek mod for Distant Worlds Universe and everyonce in a while I try out Stellaris... the stutter bug was fixed with this weeks update.

With Stellaris I have already given it a star Trek treatment where the story takes place in one of the infinite alternate worlds where Klingons, Romulans , Federation exist but all look different with different looking spaceships eh Klingons might now look like Cat People

For my mod I have every race seen in Star Trek from episode 1 of star trek : Enterprise through to the final episode of DS9.

Before starting Stellaris I randomly sort the list of races and when I meet a new race in Stellarus I assign them a star trek race name. Example, first race I came across were randomly named Vulcans as they were randomly the first that came on my list with Vulcans 2nd and so on.

Looking forward to try it out someday. Rather play Star Trek Mod over Star Wars, Star Treks has more flavors.

It has some cute features that I like in a sci fi strategy game...alas there isn't much game yet. Probably after 10 expansions.

Give me Distant Worlds 2 please...having a living, active AI private sector doing civilian stuff really has ruined me with my -basic- expectations.
