I have tried...but they have never fired.

Special launch platforms for torpedoes. Like 32 torps per salvo.
I forget the exact number

Nope. I've played Japan now in like six PBEM games, three going into 1943 -- they NEVER get released. Always sit there in Japan.

Of course, in my equal number of Allied games, I've only had that Dutch CLAA sent to me once.

I don't think those ships are rated the same 'chance' as others.

I would agree on that.

I also noticed when I was testing that if you edited a scenario and actually gave a Japanese AI player those ships in it's starting force, it never seemed to select them for TFs. They would just be left behind at Truk (or wherever).

It's almost like the UV routines don't recognise those particular ships.

Is that the CL with the "range" of only 3500? I'm not sure why you would want it - I've gotten it a couple of times and it always puts a drain on my DDs for fuel.

Looking at that model, one has to think how juicy the Oi would look to a Dauntless pilot at 10,000 ft - all that open deck area covered with nicely explosive torpedos...

Kitakami and Oi

Post by mogami »

Hi, These two ships were test platforms. They were the only 2 ships in the entire IJN outfitted with radar on Dec 7 1941.
I used to play "Warship" with this fellow down in Lake Charles La who could never understand why I said he should not buy more then two of them. (He would spend half his battle points on Kitakami CL's. ) I would use a decoy group to provoke him into launching torpedos and then bring up my CA's and pound the crap out of him.

(A line of 10 Kitakami's without torpedos is easy to sink)

I think that the Oi carried 20 torpedoes on the port battery and another 20 on the starbord (Kitakami had 36 total-18 per side). If I recall, they were old CLs converted for this purpose by removing most of the deck guns and AA. Designed for night fighting, they never really got the chance to prove themselves in combat. OI was torpedoed off Manila in 1944 and Kitakami survive the war and was broken up in 1946. I don't think either ever fired any torpedoes in action against Allied ships but am not sure.

Still, it would be fun to play with them in this game.
