Where Did It Go?

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Where Did It Go?

Post by BK6583 »

Playing the Italy scenario. I completely surrounded the Fallshirmjager division at Catania - to include two amphibious TFs blocking (so I understand) this port (hexes 153,291 and 154,290 respectively). Next turn this division disappeared. What happened?

TFs don't 'block' naval transport as such, they generate interdiction which makes it very costly for either units or freight/supplies to move through a hex.

So two immediate options. One (given its a FJ division v unlikely) the unit surrendered in the logistics phase. You can check this in the lost unit lists on the casualty tabs. Other is it sailed off, probably taking horrendous losses on the way.

Assuming this is an AI game? Final option, the AI gets a few little helps to extract itself from pockets etc. Since its far less aware of the threat than any human player would be, it does need this.

Having said that, if it were me, I'd be glad to see the back of it. A FJ division in Catania, is going to take some reduction, badly slowing your rail repair, resupply and ability to move on.

IIRC, amphib HQs do block naval movement and naval resupply. If the unit was cut off, it should have been isolated at the start of it's turn. In that case, it should be stuck in the town. If it didn't surrender (very unlikely), then if it's gone, something did go wrong. Do you have a save at the end of your prior turn or at the start of the German turn? If so, please send the save(s) to 2by3@2by3games.com or start a thread in the tech support area and attach them there. Thanks.

Unfortunately I've been saving the game as I've gone along. I did turn off FOW and the three regiments of that Fallschimjager division were in Crotone. In a different game I accidentally left a hole and this division moved towards Gela. I surrounded it and waited until the next turn when it was isolated. Much to my chagrin it routed back to the Italian mainland. Several isolated Italian units also did the same thing. I suspect Loki is correct in that the AI does seem to get some breaks in this regard.

Could it have been airlifted out?

It's a bug if an isolated unit is able to get out (the AI wouldn't airlift it even if there was an airfield there). The only way to figure it out is to have a save before the unit warped out (one just after it would be helpful if you don't have one before, but not as helpful). If for some reason it was not isolated, then all bets are off (and I don't know of any reports of a problem in the isolation routine).

Joel - Replaying Italy 43-45 against the AI (normal settings) for the umpteenth time. Same result - the 1st Fallschirmjager Div evacuated somehow (with it being totally surrounded on the land side and amphip TFs on hexes 154,290 and 153,291 respectively). However, I guess I'm just a computer illiterate. Tried to download a save of this turn and I get: "C:\fakepath\WA IT T2.sav is not supported". What am I doing wrong? I have to tell ya though that after a year plus with WiTE, WiTW is frustrating me like I've never experienced before, and I've been playing Marix games for a long time now. Naval Patrol is among many aspects of this game system that are just too overly complex and difficult - too much so. I'm just about ready to throw in the towel and definitely NOT recommend this game. Forum supports only some certain file extensions and file sizes (iirc, 2MB or 5MB on tech support). You need to zip save file before attaching it preferably on support forum. Alternatively you can email it to 2by3@2by3games.com.

Joel,

I sent a save game to the 2x3 email address last week but haven't heard anything back. This is Italy 43-45 and turn just before the 1st FJ division 'escapes' to the Italian mainland despite being completely surrounded on the ground and by two amphib TFs.

Sorry, I hadn't checked that email in a while. I did repeat this problem and sent it to Gary as it looks like the AI is warping out when it shouldn't.
