New Medium Titan Design - Iron Lion

Post by Black Flag »

Hi everyone!

Here's a Medium Titan (Medium/Close Range) design I extensively used in previous 1.4 Tos version and that proved to be quite efficient! Even if new version seems a bit harder for both Titans and jocks to survive, this design stayed with his (cool) head on and two legs standing in almost every battle I fought in "old" version times.

I tried to reproduce this design from memory since I lost all my saved files in a computer crash but it seems Iron Lion is well-balanced and competitive to other Medium titans.

Any suggestions to improve this design are welcome!!! I didn't take time enough to try several armor combinations on different parts and you might be able to find more efficient ones, then let me know! I was especially impressed on the result for new Penetrator design, which is also one of my favorites.
You can also try a variant for Iron Lion by replacing Chainsaw by VibraClaw, which can spare you a bit of weight either to take DCS3 instead of DCS2 or add an ECM device so Iron Lion's defence power is improved. Or maybe you'd prefer to simply take Scanner 5 instead of 4 so you can more easily scan your preys before jumping on them and tear them apart... It's all up to you.

Hope you'll enjoy it and expecting your feedback anyway!

Hi Black Flag,

Took a look at your Iron Lion design and overall pretty soild. 2 things I noticed pretty soon after getting into the factory

1) Always max head armor (squezzed in 2 more points there)

2) the engine was too big for the design, definatly 1 size too big, maybe 2. The second engine size reduction is a personal choice thing, In this design I think I'd take the engine with only one size reduction, this will allow you to swivel, recharge JJ and CC weapons while running) That said, I ended up keeping the engine the same size cause I found room for an EMC

Armor-wise It took me a few tries at different things but ended up reducing Heat regs by 1 catagory, swapping around armor types with the freed up weight and space, and ended up with a heat improvment of -.11C/Sec, a lvl 1 EMC, DCS improved to lvl 3, 2 points of armor in the head, and 1 extra armor pt in the CT and LoT. Only downgrade was in CBT I reduced it to 21, down from 30. I personally don't think it nessasary to armor the CBT as heavily as the rest of the titan. If you disargee that's cool, there are different design approaches afterall :) If you do want the CBT fully armored I'd suggest reducing the flares or the DCS by a lvl.

Hope I was of some help, have fun

Thanks for your improvements Sleeping Dragon!

By the way you upgraded your Penetrator, I knew you would do great job on my Iron Lion, especially tweaking the armor repartition/combination.

1) Max head armor definitely a must. I remembered the old version design had 20 pts armor but strangely wasn't able to reproduce it under the commercial version.

2) The engine is too big for the design, you're right. But I upsized it on purpose, let me explain why: I used Iron Lion titan in a specific strategy, which almost always proved devastating, usually disabling two or three equivalent titans before being in trouble.
First step was ambush (works especially well in terran or savannah map) by crouching in a dense tree areas, scanning titan and then fire the two AC12.
Second step is rushing on the prey scanning again if unsuccessful, firing again if time enough, and jump for the one or two last hexes to try charge from above. Chainsaw/punch usually was enough to cripple poor enemy.

Classic tactic but very efficient with Iron Lion, but for that you need at least engine 3 as you pointed out. BUT, things are not always like you want and I sometimes was hit by Mesons guns which reduced engine capacity, which was VERY annoying for this manoeuver!!! That's why I upsized the engine, so that even with light damage, titan can still perform as I want it to!
Of course, it might sound over cautious, but as you said "there are different approaches after all"!.

Spare room for EMC is very useful for this tactic and I'll stick to it.

Regarding CBT being 30 instead of 21: such a hit-and-rush titan can often be stuck in the middle of two or three vicious titans, and is more exposed to "backstabbing" than other designs, that's why i pushed armor in CBT as much as possible...

Anyway, thanks again for your help, and I'll try your MKII as soon as possible (maybe a duel between original version and yours, could be fun eh?)

Wait for the patch were you can pick titans for hotseat/network games. Much easier to setup such a duel.
