You need to tell them to fire when ready. There are several buttons for doing it manually in the artillery menu UI.

Alternatively, if you don't enable the 'Fire at my command' option then the first volleys are fired automatically.

So you talk about on-map indirect fire units. In the bottom of the screen there are the 'FFE', '1 ROUND' and 'HOLD' buttons for controlling them.

The "V" Hot Key also brings up the artillery Dialog for off map units.

In emergency, you can rely on unit's own smoke. I guess all units in this game are equipped with their own smoke launcher / smoke grenade. Hot key is Ctrl+W. It is in 'orders' tab. This is the one of my most frequently used hot key during this game. Too bad it has only 2 smokes per a unit. (I felt like some units have only one smoke)

In SOP there are smoke generator option for vehicles. This creates the continuous smoke from engine room, not from the smoke-nade neither any form of smoke projectile. AI really loves this feature during assault. I also sometimes use it.

As far as I know, some reconciles rifles and tank guns during cold war had smoke ammunition. I guess some of them are still operational. I wish if AB introduce such 'direct-fire' smoke munition in the future. Close Combat series is a good example, tanks of CC were possible to shoot smoke shell to the position I want. I wish if I have that option in here, this would be very useful for some situations.

Actually, most units in the game don't have smoke grenade launchers. I think British were leading the way, followed by Germans in late 1960s, while Soviets and Americans only started installing them en-masse in late 1970s.

Smoke generators were there since the end of WW2, but again, mostly limited to tanks and larger AFVs.
