Craziest sea battle......

Post by PzB74 »

It's about 1 month into scen 17 as the Allies, and I'm just waiting for the PM invasion to start the fun. Instead of taking the usual defensive positure I sent a rather big TF into Shortland.

Wanted to surprise my opponent....think we both got surprised ;)

Pretty sure that the Jap cv's were anchored there - so what could be better than putting those out of action?

Sent in a DMS, so I only hit 1 mine that didn't do much damage, then the fun began.........

Help! The Yamato and Mutsu in late May - I have never ever seen them this early. Anyway, the Nips were surprised and I got in the first rounds.

It was an incredible long battle, taking place between 3-7000 years - at least 7-8 rounds. The Yamato sucker punched 2 CA's - didn't score to many hits though, while the Mutsu didn't score a single 16" hit.

Not sure I would do this again - but the results were'nt anywhere as catastrophic as they 'normally' would be in may 42.

2 CA's, 2 DD's and the DMS sank while another 2 DD's might go down. The Chicago and Australia are unscatched together with a couple of DD's.

Many of the Jap ships have to go home for repairs, so maybe it will buy me some time. A thunderstorm will hopefully cover my withdrawal.

Luck often favors the bold....

Anyone else got a really crazy battle tale to tell?

I had a pbem game where I was supplying
Gavigamana by barge and my opponent sent a TF of PT boats in from Wanpuku to intercept. the battle screen showed each side squaring off, but then they both decided to quit the battle and go their own way. My barges unloaded without opposition.

Ijn Cv

Post by mogami »

Hi, What are you going to do if the IJN CV are between Shortland and home?

In a scenario 17 PBEM game with Silkworm I was sending troops to Rabaul and preparing to invade Port Moresby. Next thing I know Silkworm is unloading troops onto Rabaul. (my transports unloaded faster using the port then his transports unloaded over the beach)

Doing the absolutely last thing your opponent would expect, might be foolhardy - but could reap big rewards as well.

My TF had been watching his transport TF's - waiting for a chance to bounce one. Then I observed heavy Val and Kate asw attacks on my sub outside Shortland and his lvl bombers were busy pounding PM at night.

This gave me an opening - a quick strike that could hit his cv's in port.
I knew I could get bushwacked, so I sortied my CV's into the Coral Sea.
If he gave chase with his CV's - I'd would try to intercept and surprise him if the situation was favourable.

He did give pursuit, but not before most of my ships had slipped past Gili Gili and arrived in Oz. Bad weathe covered me and I only lost a heavily damaged dd on my way back home.

Unfortunately, I didn't find out what I could have achieved if I had bombarded Shortlands with a heavy TF while his CV's were in port.
Very variable reinforcements had released the Yamato and Nagato for him very early.....

I'm not usually very suicidal with my ships, but experience has shown that surprise can be a powerful ally.

Dadman

Post by mogami »

Hi Admiral Dadman likes to surprise me. He usally gets away with itthe first try. The second time maybe, but the third time it costs him.
(ask him about the time he clobbered all my poor little SC only to lose a much more valuable force as a result)
Of course you have to take risk. You can't fight a battle if you can't afford to lose. Only sometimes the fruit does not justify the risk and to be caught where you have no reason makes it worse. For every "Great" result there is a "disaster" Events that produce one also allow the other.
(I'm not getting on a soapbox, I'm sure everyone already knows this and it's only a game) I'm a chicken with my ships.

Hehe that's true - and you really get a kick out of it all!
The thing is that I usually get away with my 'Market Garden' projects!
Making your opponent paranoid is half the fun. :D

Biggest disaster that's ever happened to me was when I lost all my cv's in a single battle against you Mog, in a PacWar pbem game a few years ago :p (Will get you for that one day;)

PacWar

Post by mogami »

Hi, Ah PacWar, A fine ole gal. But now I've seen WITP. So Pac, well she don't look so good to me any more. One thing I know for sure. I won't be hammering out 5-6 PBEM games where I do 2-3 turns each per night.
(Or start 26 PBEM games at once like I did UV. I almost killed my self.
I had 2 games with U2 he had cable and I had dial up, before I could finish down loading 1 turn the one I just sent was back and I had 24 other games with players in everytime zone. I try never to go to sleep while holding a PBEM turn. I would turn mycomputer on at 0530 and have 26 turns waiting. As soon as I started sending them I started getting them back. It often took till past noon to get all the 0530 turns back out and by then 12-16 would have came back. I had to outlast my opponents everyday. (thankfully I had to spend 30 days in Jail or I would have died of exhaustion, I was fresh again when I got out)
I often made moves in one PBEM game that were in response to situations in other PBEM games. I had TF's running back and forth making no sense. I set turns to the wrong person. I think half the guys must have thought I was crazy or an idiot. (I had my CV chasing enemy BB up past Lunga in a game the Japanese player had 10 CV over by PM.
By the time I figured out my mistake I had to run for 6-7 days to get away. Mean while in the other game the enemy BB got away.
I finally got control of myself and just spent as much time per turn as they needed rather then try to move em in an move em out. In the end it didn't take that much more time and I avoided a nervous breakdown.
I was so happy when the games began to end. I limited myself to only 6-7 PBEM games at a time. Then last Nov I went crazy again and began a whole batch of scenario 19's (I didn't think I would last long in any)
Now I'm back to 7 PBEM games and I think I'll keep it this way for a while.
Pacwar??? That game will drive you crazy

Oh I just remembered one of my all time greatest battles in UV.
Back when the game was new in one of my first PBEM games as Allies.
Japanese on Lunga I was building Wunpuko and wanted to jump to Irau.
Both players were cautious (more cautious then players are today) I sent one of those 4500 endurance PG to Irau to check for mines. It encountered a Japanese PC (doing the same thing it turned out.)
The ships fought a few rounds and then withdrew, fought again a few rounds, and withdrew, did it one more time. Next turn my PG had 9 sys damage. Both ships hit mines before they left the hex and sank.

Great Battles

Post by mogami »

Hi, If you go down to page 142 you'll find my first post release thread
"Great Battles in UV"

(May 15 2002)

"OK here is the thread to store memories of the great naval battles that will occur in UV

3 May 1942

Forrest and Bubba lounged in their big chairs near the stern of the Jenny I near by the Jenny II and Jenny III bobbed on the calm Pacific waters the shirmp nets trailing behind.

"Shrimp gumbo, shrimp kabob, shrimp pot pie" Bubba contently muttered to himself while Forrest sat lost in his perpetual fog.

Suddenly the air was filled with the roar of many engines. A hundred aircraft in v formations appeared and roared toward the 3 peacfull shrimp boats.

1000lb bombs plumeted and plunged exploded and smashed the tiny helpless craft. In a few minutes only splinters floated on the calm seas. Another 80 planes appeared and unloaded just to make sure.

The headlines "US Navy scores victory in South Pacific"
meanwhile the price of shrimp sky rockets.

(2 CV strikes against 3 ship Minesweeper TF) opps I went too far east. :(

I had an odd battle with Worr in a PBEM game. A pair of unescorted AG's were headed to Dobadura. They were conronted at night by a US sub, which they proceeded to riddle with mg fire :) The sub may have had the gun cover on her deck gun, for she returned no fire :D

Very satisfying after losing maybe 10-15 AG's to subs.

While playing a 1943 scenerio as the USN against the AI I had taken Villa and was blockading Munda. I had made Villa a PT-Boat base and was rotating PT TFs to patrol Munda to pick off the AGs that were constantly trying to bring in supplys.

Then one night the Japs sent in a Fast Transport TF which had 2 CAs and several DDs. I had 2 PT TFs with 6 boats each. I figured they were going to get slaughtered. But as it turned out I only lost 3 PT-Boats and also managed to put 2 torpedos into the CA Nachi. It didnt sink but it was slowed down enough that come daylight it had broken off from the rest of its TF and was still with in range of my dive bombers on Villa, who quickly sent it to the bottom.

I decided to send in some heavier firepower and sent in a surface combat TF with 2 BBs and 4 CAs with plenty of DD escorts. Its first night on patrol at Munda this force caught another Fast Trans. TF with the CL Yubari and 3 DDs. All 4 Jap ships were sunk for only 1 of my DDs severly damaged.

As an added bonus my BBs were proving irresistable to the Jap bombers on Rabaul. They were coming out with their fighter escorts and getting mauled by my Corsairs and P38s and doing no damage what so ever to my TF. I thought about pulling my TF back but I was feeling cocky by this time, which is usually the feeling you get just before you get into trouble ;). A couple of nights later I had another Jap TF come ito Munda, this time 4 DDs. I thought "Oh boy, more target practice". And I was right. Except it was my ships being used as the targets for Long Lance torpedos :( . Oh I did manage to sink all the Jap DDs, but it took 2 seperate rounds and cost me the CA San Francisco and the DD Cummings sunk. Also the BB Colorado, the CA Indianapolis and the CL Montpelier were all damaged so badly that they had to be sent back to Pearl, after a week or so at Tulagi getting rid of the flotation damage (Indianapolis almost didnt make it to Tulagi).

After that I decided to heck with the blockade and just invaded Munda.
There is only one tactical principle which is not subject to change. It is to use the means at hand to inflict the maximum amount of wound, death, and destruction on the enemy in the minimum amount of time.
