We did get in the May 8 turn before internet troubles. Cheesesteak did this turn while I was at a family gathering...so we'll likely have half our fleet steaming towards Yokohama next turn.
May 8, 1942
Oz:
Another I-boat sights Warspite and her companion Mississippi, worried about KB interdiction I sent them south into the Tasman Sea, where our CV trio is lurking/escorting a convoy carrying a Marine regiment.
IJN carriers appear 7 hexes off Rockhampton, with what's reported as some kind of transport TF 2 hexes behind it. Guessing this is either key reinforcements for Rockhampton or an evac. With only 9 ships reported, reinforcement seems far more likely. Bundaberg's airfield is up to Size 3 with a couple base units, so we could try a raid, but I suspect he'll have tons of CAP up. We'll see what opportunities present themselves.
A couple of B-25 squadrons from Sydney hit Lord Howe I. hard, causing 200+ casualties. We identify the 53rd Nav Guard Unit on the ground. That gives him approx 100 AV there based on what we've seen. Will be tough to dislodge from an atoll hex.
Burma:
CL Nagara lobs a few more shells at Akyab but must be virtually out of ammo. Enemy fleet, including CVs, appears to be withdrawing to the south. We have some RN surface assets around that may be of use.
Despite being outnumbered, the enemy launches at attack at Akyab. With our troops heavily disrupted, and not of the highest quality anyway, it gets 1:1 odds. I think the high casualties are because we have 75+ tanks between the Hussars and Carabiniers:
Ground combat at Akyab (54,45)
Japanese Deliberate attack

First turn in nearly a week. Apparently our opponent slipped on some ice and has been unable to sit for more than a few minutes at a time. A most unfortunate turn of events. It was a good turn for us, although not quite so good as he professes, in my opinion.
Australia:
Vice Adm. Cheesesteak eschews my conservative and reasonable approach of using our 3 CVs to escort high value convoys as they transit from NZ to Oz and sends them north. We discover an enemy SCTF 8 hexes SE of Sydney and get our licks in:
Morning Air attack on TF, near Newcastle at 95,173
Weather in hex: Overcast
Raid spotted at 20 NM, estimated altitude 15,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 7 minutes
Allied aircraft
F4F-3 Wildcat x 55
SBD-2 Dauntless x 22
SBD-3 Dauntless x 33
Allied aircraft losses
SBD-2 Dauntless: 4 damaged
Japanese Ships
CL Abukuma, Bomb hits 6, heavy fires, heavy damage
DD Hatsushima, Bomb hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage
DD Nenohi
DD Wakaba, Bomb hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage
DD Yugure
DD Hatsuharu, Bomb hits 1, and is sunk
DD Ariake, Bomb hits 1, heavy fires
The enemy reinforcement TF (we think) is at Rockhampton and is unloading, we send 2 squadrons of PT boats north from Bundaberg. The KB positions itself 7 hexes ENE of Rockhampton and launches an alpha strike at Bundaberg:
Afternoon Air attack on Bundaberg , at 96,155
Weather in hex: Heavy rain
Raid detected at 119 NM, estimated altitude 13,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 44 minutes

We only lose 5 fighters, quite a few damaged. We evac the field using the rail line to fly the damaged planes to Brisbane and Sydney. AF damage is 31% AF runway and 35% AF service.
The leading elements of the Americal Division arrive at Bundaberg and begin disembarking. The rest of the divisions, as well as two additional US Army regiments, unload at Melbourne and begin moving north to Bundaberg. A fight is brewing. May end up eating my words, but I think this is to our advantage if we can keep him from securing additional bases. 18th PG moves up to Brisbane and we put ~75 fighters on CAP if he flies against it.
Burma:
Another attack at Akyab stays at 1:1, but he lands the 48th Inf Div. Junior KB is standing off 7 hexes to the south launching strikes and he's flying a massive LRCAP. Chittagong is still damaged so we can't counter very well with sweeps. Doubt our forces can hold off a second IJA division.
China:
I guess our Wuchang adventure was not for nought, for reasons beyond my comprehension he launches a shock attack in urban terrain despite having half as much AV. He takes heavy casualties:
Ground combat at Wuchang (84,51)
Japanese Shock attack
Attacking force 25044 troops, 206 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 918
Defending force 45563 troops, 238 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1693

things could’ve gone a far sight worse, but definitely not the type of turn Gooch lead us to believe it was. Maybe the injury has him down.

This is the sort of thing that happens when we let Vice Adm. Cheesesteak play with the shiny toys. Rather than heading back into the vast reaches of the Tasman Sea, he convinced me we should move the CVs toward Lord Howe I. Something about convincing the opponent there's nothing to be seen between Oz and NZ (extremely false, valuable convoy carrying USMC units is off Hobart). The KB made a full speed run south, covering nearly 15 hexes and pops up just north of Lord Howe I. Graphic below. Luckily for us they were 8 hexes away, so we got sort of a proxy carrier battle with our squadrons attacking retreating IJN DDs and his attacking an ASW convoy off Brisbane. Notable that no CAP from Akagi appeared present, perhaps she is in fact under repair from that torpedo she took from a sub last month.
First, B-25s from Sydney attacking Lord Howe get caught up:
Morning Air attack on Yokosuka 2nd SNLF, at 100,169 (Lord Howe Island)

So overall this would be a loss for us, but it's not decisive. The key is what we do now. With him having gone max speed with the KB he'd be really stretching his fuel to try a second day in a row, but we can't discount the possibility. We have enough gas for a max speed run, so I think we do that. Big question is due south, southeast and try to trick him or west/southwest towards the Aussie coast.

This is also a massive convoy, I suspect he's brought major reinforcements in.
In Burma two RN DDs attempt to disrupt the unloading force, but are beaten off by four IJN CAs.
Another ground attack at Akyab doesn't yield for him, 1:1 odds again but I suspect he did not attack with his full force.

RE: Always with them negative waves... Aaffins/Cheesesteak v. RADM Yamaguchi
May 12, 1942
It seems that the enemy may be evacuating Rockhampton, two important data points suggesting this:
SigInt: "1/2nd Division is located at Singapore(50,84)." The 2nd was one of the two divisions that had landed at Rockhampton originally.
The other was much more fun - the enemy TF that we sent those PT boats after at Rockhampton last night was moving up the Australian coast inside the reef rather than out to sea. We send a squadron of A-20s one of A-24s up to Charter Towers and let them loose. A series of raids yields this:
Morning Air attack on TF, near Palm Island at 92,143
Weather in hex: Overcast
Raid spotted at 13 NM, estimated altitude 8,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 4 minutes

xAP Teikyo Maru, Bomb hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage

xAP Taizan Maru

Guns lost 19 (10 destroyed, 9 disabled)
Japanese Ships
xAK Asakasan Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire

xAK Arima Maru, Bomb hits 1

So it certainly seems that was an evac convoy, not reinforcements as we had suspected.
The news is not so good in Burma, as he lands the Imperial Guards and forces us out of Akyab. The BBF Brigade and a construction bn. evaporate.
Guess he's missing the amphib bonus:
Amphibious Assault at Akyab (54,45)
TF 5 troops unloading over beach at Akyab, 54,45
Japanese ground losses:
1008 casualties reported

Non Combat: 2 destroyed, 194 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 30 (0 destroyed, 30 disabled)

He attempts to take Kunming with paratroops but runs into a Chinese cavalry corps and fails.

RE: Always with them negative waves... Aaffins/Cheesesteak v. RADM Yamaguchi

KB has moved back north to its original position off Rockhmapton. I'm curious what his plan is here, maybe CAS for the looming ground battle? The first two brigades of the 6th Aus Div will arrive tomorrow.
The convoy we hammered last turn appears to have put into Cairns. Don't know if that was his plan or if it was forced because he undoubtedly has many damaged ships and would have been worried about losing troops.
Up in Burma he's been keeping the Jr. KB just off the coast 6-7 hexes south of Akyab to provide air cover. That means he's flying a pretty punishing LRCAP for his pilots. With Chittagong's airfield repaired we send in a sweep of 80 P-40s from the 49th PG. We lose 20 planes, but take 21 carrier Zeroes with us as well as 18 Oscars.
I suspect a bombardment will be inbound soon so we move most of the planes back to Calcutta for recovery.
Here's the current map:

Good work. Once you have enough base forces and construction engineers Dacca is a pretty good base to build up to avoid the bombardments. Also, keeping Cox's supplied can be tough. You might consider pulling it all back to Chittagong. One thing you can do is convert Chittagong to an Aus or US base (if the correct units are there) and start producing PTs and barges. The barges can supply Cox's.
If you haven't thought of it, I'd suggest shipping a few EABs and/or Seabees to Cape Town. There never seems to be enough engineers in that theater.
Cheers,
CB

Yes, we have built up Dacca since it's invulnerable to bombardment; it's up to a Size 6 AF with plenty of AV support.
We haven't built Cox's Bazar at all, I agree it's not really worthwhile so I'm inclined towards a token effort at defending it.
That's a great point regarding shipping some engineers to India, we have several construction units just arrived in CONUS that I've sort of been thinking 'do we need these anywhere in the Pacific?'. I think we will ship a few to India.

They seem to need an English grammar expert or two. ... but then if they are doing assignments for today's high schoolers it's probably best not to turn in an assignment with perfect English grammar. [:D]ORIGINAL: david230

I'm pretty sure the bot referenced Australia because this thread has been talking about it a lot. Probably the programming assumed that we must then be Australian.

May 14, 1942 looks like a turn done by bots.
Vincennes lobbed a bunch of shells at Norfolk I. to essentially no effect.
The KB moved farther north and 160 Kates (without escort!?!?...probably a staff oversight) hit Bundaberg, closing the airfield for the moment. The horde of engineers we have there will fix that in short order. I'm thinking he's trying to bait us into launching another naval attack...no. We evac Charters Towers anticipating a strike.
Riveting stuff.

We don't have the 5/15 turn yet, but did get the replay.
Exciting news is that S-47 put a fish into Shokaku off Rockhampton. Undoubtedly she'll be fine with repair, but a hit on a big boy is always cause for celebration.
I do feel he's brought this on himself to some degree...he's had the carriers moving up and down the Aussie coast for more than a week now. We've had the sub mat laid out for awhile anticipating reinforcement of Rockhampton by sea. Wasn't a big stretch to move it into the KB's likely path. Also allows us to our S-boats into action since their short range is little issue this close to major bases.
Up at Kodiak an R-boat takes out a couple of our freighters moving in an EAB. One of the first real successes I can recall him having interdicting reinforcements. Sub tender at Adak, I suspect.

We bombard at Rockhampton to figure out what he has on the ground and the answer is...nothing!? He has somehow completely evacuated forces that recon reported as 4 units and 10,000 men yesterday. There is transport looking task force a few hexes offshore...I guess somehow our air search missed it.
KB remains in a covering position ~6 hexes off the coast.
Nothing else of note happens.
With Rockhampton no longer a threat the 7th Australian Div and various supporting units move north from Townsville to attack Cairns. We reposition fighters to Charter Towers to contest the skies.
Enterprise puts into Hobart for an upgrade and minor repairs. Planes fly to Melbourne to upgrate F4F4's, SBD-3's and finally, TBF's.

All IJN task forces disappear from SoPac.
He unloads a unit at Port Hedland.
We send Warspite and Mississippi to hit Lord Howe I.
Moving some APD/AK/AP to Auckland in preparation for another attempt at Raoul Island.
Longer term, 1st Marine Div is prepping for Canton I. which he does not appear to be either defending or flying air search from.
I do have to wonder what the purpose of this Rockhampton deal was. He didn't destroy anything of value, had the KB tied up for the better part of a month and gained no ground. Maybe he's playing this game at a way higher level than we can fathom and this was an elaborate ruse to get us to move a ton of ground units to Australia, but the only place we really uncovered in doing so is Perth, which he has shown any inclination towards at all.

This is definitely an interesting game. Not reading your opponent's AAR makes it even more interesting.
Maybe he picked up those Rockhampton units with fast transports?
If you haven't seen any interesting SigInt (e.g. "4ID is preparing for East Codswallop" or "17/4ID is on xAP Circle Maru heading for East Codswallop") then maybe a cigar is just a cigar--i.e. he's pulling back to establish a better defense.
Cheers,
CB
