Is there any way to reduce danger?

Post by btonasse »

I think the danger mechanics could be tweaked a little bit. If for some reason a foreign unit gets a bit close to your city you get a huge chunk of danger, which as far as I know is only reduced a tiny wee bit every turn. So basically if one turn a rogue army gets too close be prepared for at least a dozen turns of non negligeable negative happiness, even if you immediately crush the threat and on the subsequent turn completely regain all territory up to 10 hexes away. I don't know, it sounds a bit unbalanced to me. Unless of course there is something that can be done to directly reduce danger, but I'm unaware of this, especially in the early game.

I've found the issue most impactful when another regime was at war with my enemy at the same time. While we may have good relations, the border mess always results in the other regime (perhaps friendly) being very close to the conquered city. The only fix is to invade the other regime. There are no diplomacy actions to demand or trade territory.

Per the image, this is a mess.

As an aside, I recommend you always keep a battalion (safe rear area) or regiment (unsafe rear area) in each city to respond to such issues. It makes dealing with beasts, etc. much quicker. It also offers local enforcement troops and unrest suppression. MG infantry seem to be the economical choice for many players, but I use leg infantry for these units.

The problem is, not only enemy presence raises danger. There are a bunch of events that can give you a big chunk of it as well and are pretty much out of the player's control. It's really bad that there's nothing we can do to reduce it.

This maybe overkill, but I also manipulate my zone borders so that only one of my zones has a war border with an enemy zone.

Non-aligned zone borders seem to have no impact on danger levels--unless the dinosaurs come marching in.

but dosnt it actually still make sense?
if i live in that city on a maybe freshly drawn border and i know there are thousends of soldiers close to my city, i would be scared as well.
