Fighter bomber success!
Ahh I'm so happy to finally see that aircraft can be a devastating weapon [:D]! My first fighter bomber design ever with a range of 5 hexes and 100kg bombs doing just what it was designed to do (with Stuka sounds!) in an enemy city with no AA and only tanks.

Looks like your ace pilots sniped two tank destroyers or storm guns and a medium!

Those are subunits of 10 tanks each. So more like 30 tank losses.ORIGINAL: Maerchen

Yeah what I can tell so far it is a very dangerous weapon if no AA around. Like IRL

EDIT: however have not yet seen the effect of AA. But without it, is free damage on enemy.

Since they still use fuel and ammo, no damage this side of lasers+electro motors is remotely "free".ORIGINAL: Sieppo

I often hear people say "I just bombard them with artillery, it costs nothing". With them not realizing what kind of ammo guzzler (and thus metal and logistics drain) those weapon systems tend to be.

Does anyone know if the AI is effective at using aircraft or defending against it.
RE: Fighter bomber success!
The AI assessses your weaknesses and uses the best option against you. Can work out very well.
DasTactic showcased two outcomes, two nemesises', one steamrolled him and had viable stukas putting additional pressure on him, one saw dastactics single tacbomber squad, it seems, and spammed AA all over which led to the win of DasTactic as there were no quality ground units developed to defend against his massive light tank blitz.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I am curious what exactly the AI will do to counter enemies? How do they determine weaknesses? Perhaps this isn't a question we are supposed to have an answer to.

I've played with air a couple times and the AI never employed aircraft against me, thought I read somewhere it never bothered but apparently that was mistaken? It sure does like atomic weapons though, understandably. Overall I'm pretty disappointed with aircraft because they guzzle ammo and fuel at a rate which puts artillery to shame but to less effect.

I was surprised to discover that electric energy isn't in any way different from Fuel (Oil) where logistics are concerned, only where its generation is concerned (which isn't "free" either*) :
fb.asp?m=4949346
*EDIT : except for the Major Regimes' starting Zone Hex Perk Degraded Liquid Energy Mini-Reactors (and a few standalone others scattered around the planet)... which actually do NOT consume any Fuel(Oil), nor population/workers, but won't get you far either
RE: Fighter bomber success!
How does one defend against air power, is there anyway to set fighters to patrol or intercept areas ?
Unless you are planning to pave the planet with air strips this isn't practical IMO. Mine has 11 hex range.
Also I'd never bomb an enemy city, that just unnecessary private assets damage.

The manual has a whole chapter on Air Forces.

Any machinegun has some ability to shoot at low flying aircraft. And foiliage reduces low flier attack by up to -70%.ORIGINAL: yutowap33

Quad MG, Flak Guns, Fliers and AA missiles of course are the best option.
It is a lot harder to defend against high flying aircraft like level bombers. But you can see those values under "Air Design" or even on the Unit Card.

In Unit Admin in the right-side bar, there's an option to set the currently selected air unit to attempt to intercept enemy air missions within their operational range. It offers a choice of readiness threshold so your pilots don't get themselves shot down flying out in busted up aircraft.ORIGINAL: yutowap33

Not affiliated with Slitherine. They added it to my name when they merged the Slitherine and Matrix account systems.

RE: Fighter bomber success!
Aircraft are a good way to take your excess fuel and ammo reserves and literally dump them on your enemy. That sometimes even kills a few people as a nice bonus.
Stick to land units for any serious warfare. At least until our engineers figure out aircraft weapons better than 1960s tech (deploying bombers with plasma engines dropping dumb bombs is a riot).

100 percent agree. I remember an old science fiction story which posited that faster than light travel actually required only an incredibly basic technology level, and humans had simply been unlucky. What this translated to in real terms were an alien invasion fleet noticing earth didn't have ftl, dropping burning sticks from the sky on us in the expectation of immediate surrender from the local savages.

When most alien civilisations developed FTL, they kinda leveled out at Muskets and airships in technology. We skipped the FTL, allowing us to go way ahead:
