Assault HQs and Reassigning Units. Leningrad Scenario Advice

Post by VesaAwesaka »

I've had a few go's at the Leningrad scenario and keep on losing. When I start the scenario there's two infantry corps that are attached to army group north. In WITE1 I would always attach these two corps to the 16th and I believe 18th army but in WITE2 the northern panzer group is already on assault status to start with lots of left over capacity. Does it not make more sense to assign the independent corps to the panzer group on assault status? Should I be completely maxing out the capacity of the panzer group by shifting forces over from the 2 northern armies?

On the first turn I typical capture Riga, clear the rail line to Riga and take all of Lithuania. The Soviets fall quite far back and almost immediately start forming a double line at or behind Pskov. Should I keep pushing them with the panzers and some of my infantry or should I wait 2-3 turns to have my forces catch up? In WITE 1 I was seemingly able to push non stop with very few breaks but in WITE2 I find that the CVs of my infantry quickly shrinks and the Soviets are much less aggressive and more willing to fall back and wait me out while avoiding pockets.

its a tricky scenario - and the WiTE2 AI is good

but to the specifics - no reason why not make the most use of the assault status, the cost is in terms of defensive preparations but that isn't immediately relevant

remember they don't get the CPP gain bonus on the turn of assignment (but as you have no SMP on T1 this isn't important) and you will pick up -1/-2 on a few admin rolls (depends how different their new command allocation is)

the rest is trial and error. My strong feeling in WiTE2 is to ask yourself why are you doing something? In the main #1 is relatively frictionless, #2 has a lot of friction.

So one question is why Riga on T1? Is it better to go for Daugavipils and clear the dual rails running towards Pskov? Neither is right or wrong but worth thinking over.

You do need to rest see the rules on admin movement, that might influence how you are moving your infantry?

I'd stop my rail repair at Pskov and get it functioning as a super depot asap. That should help your MP as you clear the Luga line - in the main attacking with low MP Pzrs is simply creating a problem for yourself. Again look at the rules on how high CPP can offset supply problems that might depress your MP.

Have a look at the beta AAR by Bobo, while its based on the campaign his approach to Leningrad might give you some ideas to try out

So there isn't really downsides to maxing out your Assault armies early on aside from a turn of admin roles suffering? It makes more sense to max out there capacity early as long as you can keep up with the Panzer group HQ?

I'll take a look at the Bobo's aar. Thanks!
