SEPTMENBER 10, 1943

7 MS sunk and 4 U-Boat hits.

There were no Axis attacks this turn. I think this is the first time this has happened in a summer turn since the War began. The Allies make only a few attacks as well. But the American do chase and destroy another German panzer.

Stjeand and I are arguing about who is winning the game. He says I am, but I say he is because he is doing better than historical. Russia is a lot further East than it should be and Italy is still in the War. The only location where the Allies are ahead is in NW Europe, and he has me pretty contained there for now.

SEPTEMBER 24, 1943

No U-Boat Attacks.

Heavy rains bring all action on the Russian Front to a halt.

IN NW Europe the Axis Shatter a US Armour.

Last turn I totally forgot about my American Infantry division in Tirane. So I didn't notice that the Axis had moved in a German Armour which this turn caused said division to retreat.

NW Europe. Note the Axis have 6 Armour and 2 Mechanized vs just my 3 Armour. So no attacks for me this turn. It will be interesting to see which of us, if either, goes on the offensive here in the Spring.

OCTOBER 8, 1943

Once again there are no U-Boat raids.

Rain in NW Europe means there will probably not be any attacks here now until March at the earliest.

But a cold turn in the Arctic zone allows the Russians to make another attempt to capture Moscow. Now that the Rules have changed I employ what is now one of the most effective methods of destroying an enemy unit. This is to make numerous low odds (2-1 or less) attacks against a unit until you have worn it down in strength and then to attack it with fresh units at high odds. In this case I made 8 low odds attacks on the armour in Moscow using my units circled in blue and then attacked it with fresh units at 9-1 odds. The result was an overrun panzer. This tactic does not always work. Sometimes the unit will retreat even at low odds, though if set to Hold (as I am sure this panzer was) this is unlikely. At other times the unit will make a "saving throw' against being overrun and simply retreat instead. Even when this tactic works it usually results in several beat up friendly units (as evidenced by my blue circled units). Stjeand has complained that I seem to be luckier with this tactic than him and he is probably right (at least so far).

In any event, Moscow is once again in Soviet hands. Now I just have to hope for bad weather next turn.

The tactic also works on a German Infantry West of Kharkov.

By the way, what I would like to see is a unit being more likely to retreat if it has low effectiveness. Right now I don't believe effectiveness has any effect on whether or not a unit will retreat; except indirectly in that the lower a units effectiveness the lower its combat strength.

Forces. Both Germany and Russia have less than they did in July, but I expect both to recover over the Winter.
