Question on research stations and labs?

Post by Jorgen_CAB »

I have another question on how labs influence your research ability in the game.

As it seems from the streams each lab will give you an amount of potential research. Say a starting lab give you 12 research. It seems you gain half of those without having to fund the lab at all.

What is preventing you from just spamming research stations as much as you can to gain quit allot of research for a relatively cheap cost. The station probably cost you less than 300 credits a year in maintenance if you remove weapons on it?

Should not all research on labs have to be funded or am I missing something from how it works from the streams?

As an example from one stream they had 16 research from their population and a potential 58 from their station and received 30 of those 58 point with zero money going into research from their budget. It was set at 50% but no money went into it as shown by the ledger.

In another example it was a total of 80 potential research and they received 42. Again the budget was set at 50% but no money went into it as the cash-flow was negative.

It seems a bit confusing, but I hope we can't just spam stations to get almost free research that way.

Your population provides research. Each research station can fit two labs, which provide research. Research stations can only be build on locations with research bonuses, so you can't spam research stations everywhere. Research locations are relatively uncommon and strategic locations. Spaceports can also fit one research lab, but are expensive and not easy to spam.

The research bonuses from all locations also add to research speed but also act to unlock higher threshholds in the research tree.

You'll only get half your research potential from each lab unless you can fully fund it through bonus funding, which depends on your cashflow, so fully funding a lot of research labs can easily strain your economy.

It's a different system than DW1, but overall there are several limits on the ability to quickly "spam" research.

OK... thanks... I somehow got the impression you could build them everywhere. Most seem to build them at the home world, but I guess that one also usually have some technology bonus on it.

You start with a ruin. The one that gives you the Skip Drive technology (no more looking for that at STL).
It also gives a reserach bonus I think.
