Campaign Series: Vietnam is a new turn-based, tactical/operational war game that focuses on the Indochina War, Vietnam Civil War and the first years of US involvement in Vietnam with over 100 historical scenarios.
Sixteen U.S. Navy A-6 Intruders and 12 support aircraft took off from the aircraft carriers USS Constellation and USS Ranger to carry out the first American bombing of North Vietnam's largest cities, striking at fuel and oil facilities near Haiphong, the nation's second biggest city. Twenty-five minutes later, 25 USAF F-105 Thunderchief fighter-bombers attacked fuel storage tanks in Hanoi. However, a CIA report two months later would conclude that the daring raids had escalated the war but failed to have the expected impact, noting "there is no evidence that the air strikes have significantly weakened popular morale."

The Fort Hood Three -- Private Dennis Mora, Private David A. Samas, and Private First Class James Johnson -- were three United States Army soldiers in the 142nd Signal Company, 2nd Armored Division stationed at Fort Hood, Texas who refused to be deployed to fight in the Vietnam War on June 30, 1966. This was the first public refusal of orders to Vietnam, and one of the earliest acts of resistance to the war from within the U.S. military. Their refusal was widely publicized and became a cause célèbre within the growing antiwar movement. They filed a federal suit against Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara and Secretary of the Army Stanley Resor to prevent their shipment to Southeast Asia, were court-martialed by the Army for insubordination, and sentenced to three years' hard labor.
The actions of The Fort Hood Three, because they occurred so early in the war, have been called "a turning point in the broader antiwar movement" and "the beginning of a rank-and-file upsurge against military authority and [the] war." Because they reached out to and received significant support from the civilian antiwar movement, they "helped to forge an enduring alliance between antiwar GIs and the civilian antiwar movement that encouraged thousands more GIs to join the resistance."

On 1 July, 1968, the Phoenix Program to identify and neutralize the VC infrastructure was launched by the CIA and South Vietnamese agencies
The Phoenix Program (Vietnamese: Chiến dịch Phụng Hoàng) was designed and initially coordinated by the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) during the Vietnam War, involving the American, Australian, and South Vietnamese militaries. In 1969, CIA responsibility was phased out, and the program was put under the authority of the Civil Operations and Revolutionary Development Support (CORDS).
The program, which lasted from 1967 to 1972, was designed to identify and destroy the Viet Cong (VC) via infiltration, assassination, torture, capture, counter-terrorism, and interrogation. The CIA described it as "a set of programs that sought to attack and destroy the political infrastructure of the Viet Cong." The Phoenix Program was premised on the idea that North Vietnamese infiltration had required local support within noncombat civilian populations, which were referred to as the "VC infrastructure" and "political branch" that had purportedly coordinated the insurgency.
Throughout the program, Phoenix "neutralized" 81,740 people suspected of VC membership, of whom 26,369 were killed, and the rest surrendered or were captured. Of those killed, 87% were attributed to conventional military operations by South Vietnamese and American forces, while the remaining 13% were attributed to Phoenix Program operatives.
The Phoenix Program was heavily criticized on various grounds, including the number of neutral civilians killed, the nature of the program (which critics have labelled as a "civilian assassination program,") the use of torture and other coercive methods, and the program being exploited for personal politics. Nevertheless, the program was very successful at suppressing Viet Cong political and revolutionary activities. Public disclosure of the program led to significant criticism, including hearings by the US Congress, and the CIA was pressured to shut it down. A similar program, Plan F-6, continued under the government of South Vietnam.

Operation Buffalo was a major operation that took place in the southern half of the DMZ, northeast of Con Thien.
On 2 July 1967, the PAVN 90th Regiment ambushed the 1st Battalion 9th Marines. The Marines suffered 84 killed, 190 wounded and 9 missing, making this the worst one-day loss for the Marines in Vietnam.
The operation ended on 14 July with total Marine casualties for the operation amounting to 159 killed, 845 wounded and 1 missing. U.S. forces claimed that the PAVN suffered 1,290 killed and a further 513 probably killed. 164 bunkers and 15 artillery and rocket positions were destroyed. Around 100 PAVN weapons were recovered or captured.
One marine who fought in the operation recounted 40 years later that he and other Marines were cynical of claimed PAVN casualty figures in the fighting along the DMZ, stating that "If we sent in a body count of fifteen to the headquarters for the Marines Corps in Vietnam, it would turn into twenty or thirty and by the time it got to MACV in Saigon it would turn into fifty or sixty".

MACV sent a request to Admiral U. S. Grant Sharp Jr., Commander-in-Chief Pacific, for authorization of a patrol of the Gulf of Tonkin to get information about North Vietnam's coastal defense. Admiral Sharp would dispatch the destroyer USS Maddox to the area.
The following month, August 1964, Maddox was involved in a skirmish with North Vietnamese torpedo boats, the Gulf of Tonkin incident, which led to the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution and increased U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War.

Controlling headquarters: 1st Bde, 25th Inf Div; 10th ARVN Div. Task organization: 4-9 Inf, 4-23 Inf, C/1-5 Inf (M), 7-11 Art; 52nd ARVN Regiment. Execution: The operation was mounted to locate the VC forces responsible for the 30 Jun ambush against the 4/52 ARVN Bn. The 1st Bde moved its CP to Xuan Loc to control the operation. On 5 Jul, 4-9 Inf was committed to Gia Ray and on 15 Jul the 4-23 Inf was employed in the Vo Dat-Vo Xu area. The operation also served to reopen the traffic between the La Nga Valley and Saigon. Results: 4 enemy killed, 1 detained.
In an action apparently timed to coincide with the American 4th of July holiday, the VC attacked Polei Krong Camp, killing 41 Civilian Irregular Defense Group (CIDG) troops and seizing a mortar, four machine guns and more than 100 small arms.

Operation PAUL REVERE I begins. The 3d Brigade, 25th Infantry Division operating from LZ OASIS will launch a campaign along the Cambodian border to prevent a sortie from then 1st PAVN Division and a possible attack of the CIDG Camps at Plei Djereng, Duc Co and Plei Me. Keeping one of its battalion in reserve at OASIS, the brigade will push its other two maneuver units to the southwest in the direction of the Ia Drang Valley. The 2d and 3d Brigades of the 1st Cavalry Division will reinforce if needed.

Operation: MACON
Location: An Hoa, My Loc, My Loc, Cu Ban, Song Thu Bon, Song Ky Lam, LZ DIXIE, LZ SAVANNAH, Quang Nam Province. Type: search and destroy. Controlling headquarters: 9th Marines. Task organization: 1/3 Marines, 3/3 Marines, 3/9 Marines; 51st ARVN Regiment (elts). Intelligence: R20 Doc Lap Bn. Execution: the operation was mounted to intercept the R20 Bn moving from the Operation LIBERTY AO into the An Hoa Basin. Several minor contacts were made but the enemy battalion couldn't be fixed and destroyed. On 14 July, MACON was scaled down to a battalion-size operation with 3/9 protecting the An Hoa industrial complex against local guerillas. Results: 380 enemy killed, 5 detained, 24 US KIA, 72 US WIA.
The battle of Nam Đông took place from July 5–6 1964, when the Viet Cong (VC) and People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) attacked the Nam Đông CIDG camp in an attempt to overrun it. During the battle, 57 South Vietnamese defenders, two Americans, an Australian Military advisor, and at least 62 attackers were killed.
Captain Roger Donlon became the first American to be awarded the Medal of Honor in Vietnam for killing two VC sappers and thereby preventing them from breaching the Nam Dong base, while sustaining shrapnel wounds in the process.
Warrant Officer Kevin Conway of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) was killed in the assault. He was the first Australian to be killed in action in the Vietnam War.
