Old timer

Post by HobbesACW »

Hi folks, just getting back into the Campaign Series after a long time away (pre this version). It looks fantastic and obviously a lot of love has gone into it.

As an old newbie my only frustration is not being able to change the key bindings. I assume it is not possible to change them using a script as I've not seen anything on the forum about this? The left hand side where your hand hovers has keys I will probably never use. I would love to use them for one press actions like load or unload. Do you really need 10 keys for different 2D and 3D map screens? Why not just use one key to cycle through all the 2D maps and another for the 3D maps?

Just my first impressions - it's the hotkeys I'm thinking about as well as the beautiful grahics.

Chris (Hobbes)

P.S. I've read briefly about the .ai files but I only saw a group of four scenarios that had them when I took a look. I remember the AI being pretty awful in the old game so was hoping for a big improvement there. Is that mainly for the Vietnam game?

That's great to hear! Welcome to the newer versions!

I'll leave a if it is possible to use your own hot keys to Crossroads, that's beyond my knowledge of under the hood.

As for the many hotkeys for the the zoom levels, you can just zoom in and out with your mouse scroll, but I also use the hot keys for when I want to get to a specific view quickly. It's how I've been playing since 1997... old habits die hard.

The Middle East game now has the functionality for to script the scenarios using Lua, which is what was doing for the Vietnam scenarios. They will have some form of scripting in the near future and detailed scripting in the further future. You can see what those lua files look like with the Sirte scenarios. Eventually I will have time to script all the Middle East scenarios properly, but that will come in the future as it is extremely time consuming.

The *.ai file attributes can now all be adjusted within the Lua files as well, so at the moment the scenarios all use a "default" setting from the master .ai file.

Hope this helps!

Hey Old Timer,

I don't know your budget but if you can afford a fancy keyboard and mouse Logitech has models where you can assign a profile with mappings to the macros keys and mouse buttons along with custom lighting per key per game. Here is what I use.

Mouse

Keyboard

They are costly but are fantastic if you play a lot of games.

Thanks for the hotkey ideas. Unfortunately I don't think my wife would be too happy if I bought that keyboard.

I've done quite a bit of scripting for AGEOD games in the past. If I get back into the Campaign Series I might take a look at Lua and attempt one of the smaller scenarios.

Hi HobbesACW, nice to make your acquaintance. No, it's not currently possible to change hotkey bindings.

Berto did a stellar job of assigning a hotkey to almost every action. In addition, we developed the Toolbars to provide access to these actions as well. Personally, I still don't have all the hotkeys memorized so I use the ones I remember, and for the others, I rely on the Toolbar icons. I don’t use the menu much unless it’s the only option, but that’s just me!

And yes, we've pretty much exhausted all the available hotkey combinations.

I have a wish list item for the Spring 2025 update, where I’d like to create a User Preferences tabbed dialog to provide easier access to Options. While this might not free up many hotkeys, it would simplify the menus and make options easier to access. While working on that, I'll also look into dynamic hotkey assignment. It's definitely a neat idea!

Hi Crossroads, thanks for the reply. Very sorry to read about Berto. I knew him a little over the years. I've also spoken to Jason and a few of the other old timers but not for some years. Mike I know after making a scenario for his Korean War mod after I had made a few others for West Front. Unfortunately I think that scenario (Yongsan) was lost after an update required some conversion.

After a few more days with the new game I'm becoming more comfortable with the hotkeys. Now I've read about the occasional problems using CNTL and the ways around that things are easier. There are certainly plenty of options with the UI.
I'm amazed how much work you have all put into the game. It's wonderful!

Cheers,
Chris
