Can't restore saved games

Post by Perkalov »

I assume this is a known problem, so I have no pictures/logs of it but here goes...

Me and my friend has just started trying out the game (used to play tabletop 20+ years ago).

We can get the game started and play, but we fail to restore saved games, next game-day.

Can say that we have had some bugs, that I suspect is connected to undo all/ctrl Z.
One time I was messing up and breaktrough and ctrl Z'ad and a couple of units disapered.
The other time, I used ctrlZ halfway trough movment phase, and when I was done with the phase, it corrected a bunch of units back to original position (thinking it returned all units I had previoused moved that was then moved back with ctrlZ).
After some back and forth talk (after ending my movement) I conclued that what he saw was how it should look but I saw a half finished version of my movement phase.

I am mentioning it since I feel that it might be relevant to our inability to restore saved game.

What is wrong with the saves?

This is not a known problem at all. Can you check using windows if you've got the gamesaves in right folder?

- World in Flames/Scenarios/Global War/Saved Games (if it's global war you are playing)?

Are autosaves also not reloading?

What mode of play are you using?

The Undo all button (Ctrl Z) is unfortunately known for containing bugs. We never use it (and if necessary we reload an autosave).

I agree that trouble restoring saves is unheard of. Are you able to see your saved games using "Browse". Or even just use Explorer to find them. If it's Netplay you are using then you can't restore a game unless you are both on the Netplay forum. There is a facility to "Review" a Netplay game file on your own PC, but trying to "Restore" it will take you to the Netplay forum to await your opponent.

Regarding Undo, I find the Ctrl-Z is like taking a blunderbuss to a snail hunt. It should be avoided.

However in the unit menu (right click on a unit) there is an individual Undo which is very helpful. Sometimes it is greyed out because the game won't let you undo a move that was only made possible by for example, moving an HQ to put a unit in supply before that unit moves. In cases like that, you need to undo other units before you can undo the one of interest. It's a bit more awkward but it is doable and certainly better than CTRL-Z wherein you have to essentially start the phase over again.

Barbarossa (trying out the game, that seemed like the least painful) but yea, I can find the saves in .../Barbarossa/Saved Games
(using windows explorer)

Yes, we are using NetPlay. Yes we where both logged in.

Im thinking that the saves got corrupted due to me and the other guy basically had different games (mine was the version that was f'ed up)?
How does it save?
If I save the game, does it save my version and send it to my friend or does the game save "my version" on my computer and "his version" on his computer?
If the later, would it then recognise that they are different and refuse to load?

Anyway, Since this wasn't something known, I'll make a few tries when I get my friend online and pay more attention to exactly what is happening. Was just tired and frustrated at the time can't honestly remember exactly what happened when we tried... I think it sent the invitation to him, but after he accepted nothing happened. But unsure.

No idea if it helps, but I would make sure we both had the same game version.

When using netplay, one of the players makes a gamesave. The other player receives a message that the gamesave has been made on both computers at the exact same time, which makes sure both games are in sync.

When this has been done and you are exiting the game, you get another message if you want to make a gamesave. Ignore this message. Because if you make another gamesave, the other player doesn't get this gamesave and you will be out of sync.

You than cannot reload that gamesave, because it isn't exactly the same one...

And Orm is right: both players have to use the same gameversion (but usually, the game will not run or will give a lot of bugs if that's not the case).

When you want to continue the game, both players load the gamesave on their own machine. After both player are logged in on the netplay server, that server checks if both games have the same numbers and one of the players can than start the game on both machines.

1. How do I check the gameversion?

2. The games was clearly out of sync when the saves where made (my ctrlZ put it out of sync, I know that for a fact). This is why I asked if the game is saved from our respective "versions" of the sesion (keeping it out of sync) or if it saves one version and sends it to player #2 (repairing it).
With modern bandwidth I don't really understand why the save isn't done on one computer and information sent when loading, but Im not much of a computer tech tbh.

You can check the version number in the help menu under "about the current game".

If you don't have two files that match, you can zip the most trustworthy file and email it to your opponent.

If you mean if the files are in sync, look in the red area to the right of a selected file. It shows the program version, the turn info and a lot of other stuff. For being sure you are in sync with your opponent, compare the "Next Entry" numbers. They should match.

Okay, what it does is this (we got same version 3.0.2).
My friend logs in on the Forum.

I try to restore the game with a file we controlled have the same "Game #" and "Next Entry #"

When I log in to the Forum I get "xxx is online" or something similar.
I hit "ok" and he gets an invite.
Then he clicks "ok" and... nothing.

Im stuck at "Waiting for response from xxx".

Have you tried different files? Have you tried with him doing the invite?

BTW 3.0.2 is quite an old version. The latest beta is 7.01.

Another thing - perhaps totally unrelated, even to the version of the program you are using, but I do recollect now that early on, people were having problems because the names in the saved games did not match the names they use on the forum. In other words you have to be sure that when you set up a game, your opponent and you are using the same names as on the forum including even to be sure they are case sensitive.

That could account for being able to login to the forum but not being able to match up the game files.
