Why no ship combat like WITPAE?

War in Spain 1936-39 is the first in a new wargame series, using a new Land-Sea-Air engine inspired by War in the Pacific - Admiral’s Edition. Gameplay and realism are improved by TRUE AI and a detailed Logistics systems. A hyper detailed OOB reaches down to battalion and company level. A beautiful, hand drawn, 5 nautical mile per hex map massively increases player immersion.

Why no ship combat like WITPAE?

Post by Tanaka »

In WITPAE individual ships on the ocean firing at each other looked so great and realistic. Only thing missing was night combat animations as day and night looked exactly the same.

But WIS has ship boxes on an DOS looking plain grey background firing at each other which looks terrible like an old Atari game. In the middle you have colored squares chasing each other around. It is the one thing turning me off of this game.

All other combat animations were modeled over. Why not the naval?

Why should they have been ported over when everything is entirely new?

TBH I was hoping the current animations were just placeholders as dots chasing each other (ya, I know you can zoom in) are not very immersive.

Wait until you can control one ship in battle . . .

Disclaimer, I have zero affiliation with the WIS team in any way.

I get that WIS looks DOS. I remember how grand did WPO/WITP look. But WIS actually shows movement and location, and I think it's a major step forward. Maybe this will be a future feature. Let's support them and find out.

I would have preferred the Naval animations from WITP-AE, but it doesn't matter much, simply because there just isn't alot of ship-to-ship combat, unlike WITP-AE

This is really a land war game

In successive games with the engine that might have more ships, maybe they'll add that....a "War in the Med" for example

I'd gladly trade all the visuals for more information. The combat reports lack a lot of information I'd like to see.

The programmer's effort was to put a kind of mini-simulator of naval battles into the game.
Which they will gradually develop and improve.
It's not that bad, let's give it more time.

If it is not broken why try to fix it? WITPAE naval battle simulator looks great and plays great.

My suggestion would be to move the moving colored boxes square off to the lower side somewhere like a mini map. Change the grey background to ocean. Remove the boxes around the ships. Put the ships on the ocean firing at each other like WITPAE. Voila you have both!

Because this is not WITP:AE! The developers decided how they want it and you don't know what they want to end up with.

The naval-battle maps in WiS do have some similarities to those in Rule the Waves 3. With some further refinements, the WiS naval maps could offer some interesting tactical possibilities beyond the vertical ship lineups in WitP-AE.

We call AE the "level 0 naval battle board"

WIS has the "level 1"

Future has the "level 2"
