[1900.23] Add reference point at... offset

Post by Knightpawn »

Using 'Add RF at...' places an RP at an offset of the input coordinates (of a magnitude of a few decimals of the degree.)

[no need for save]

1. Open the map
2 Place an RP anywhere
3 Take note of the coordinates
4. Do 'Add reference point at..' and input the coordinates under 3
5. Notice where the new RP appears

To Illustrate

If you create an RP with the hovering coordinates of RP 8 you get the RP 9

I did not transform the coordinates into decimal format.

The distance in this test is 11 m or 0,00593952 nm. This must be the resolution of CMO.

How do you get 20 nm?

I use the Add Reference Point At feature often. I'm guessing you used Cntrl-X to map RP-8's coordinates to the clipboard and then you used those coordinates with Add Reference Point At and got the offset. When you use Cntrl-X and want a very precise coordinate you need to be zoomed in as far as CMO will allow. Place the cursor on the point as best you can and click in the map. Don't move the cursor and use Cntrl-X to get the coordinates.

When I followed that process using the hover coordinated provided (N49.29.06, E30.44.09), I was 4 meters offset with the coordinate that I mapped to the clipboard and inserted.

I feel decimal degrees will give a more precise position. Since CMO maps coordinates to the clipboard in decimal degrees you will always be off by a little because your using the cursor/point to get the coordinate. It's like plotting coordinates on old paper maps; the tip of your pencil is going cause a little error. In our case, its the placement of the cursor.

Cntl-X is great for a getting coordinates that are in the ballpark, but If you're looking for precision, I find using Lua to extract coordinates is a the best method to get a coordinate for something on the map.
