Qs from a new guy

Post by irishman »

Just bought UV. Looking forward to a victorious summer! but just a few questions before I launch my campaign for world domination!

1 - What does the 'plane surrounded by a red circle' sign mean on the map?
2 - I have damaged ships but the 'send to Japan' option isn't active. Does this mean I have to sit and wait for them to repair very slowly?
3 - Do you suffer any penalties for using a ship with sys damage, e.g. does a carrier with 15 damage perform any worse then one with no damage?
4 - How do I upgrade planes? I tried sending a squadron of A5M4 Claudes to Truk but instead of upgrading, they increased form a squadron of 9 planes into a squadron of 27!
5 - Which is the most challenging long term scenario for Japan, 17 or 19?
6 - Does a minesweeper have to keep moving into and out of a hex instead of just staying put? Rabaul has a minefield beside that seems to catch big ships every time they enter no matter how many times I sweep it!

Thanks,
Irishman.

1A. ive had mine since march, and it still doesnt work, so dont get ur hopes up, unles sof course uve installed it and it works
2. i think that is an airfield, the plane with the red circle
3. i believe u have to send them to truk first, then they can be sent to japan
4. id imagine they perform worse with sys damage
5. to upgrade i think they have to be within transfer range, and b supplied
6. as for most challenging scen, i dont know... yet
7. wat r u doing wen u order them to sweep?

keep in mind i have NOT played this stuborn game yet, ut im jus trying to help with the knowledge i have

1. the "ghostbusters plane" symbol means bad weather and no flying in that hex. There are several mods for this out there if you don't like that graphic particularly...
2. Ships need to be in Truk or Noumea to be sent home for repair.
3. sys damage among other things will slow sailing speed, and gives you less of a cushion in an attack before you can't land any planes on it (the 50 combined damage point limit...)
4. upgrades will occur when there are enough of the new plane type in the pool to replace the entire squadron. someone else can probably give you the exact algorithm. I have had partial squads upgrade though...so I have had 1/42 in F4F-3 and 2/42 in F4F-4
5. can't help you on this one
6. I need a refresher on mine ships myself
I'm essentially graphically and history oriented, unfortunately to connect the two I have to do maths. I hate maths.

The Minesweep TF is patrolling unless it is docked. While patrolling, it is clearing mines. Set 'patrol/donnot retire' and it will sweep for mine continually. Sometimes it will dock again. I set the target hex (the one I want to sweep) as a different one as it's home base. It tends not to dock on it's own as much but you still have to keep an eye on it. I also, put my MSWs into transport TFs. They sweep ahead of the TF and clear mines and find a path. DMSs do the same but better. They are like gold tho, so take care of them. They are high-speed mine sweepers.
There are only two kinds of people that understand Marines: Marines and the enemy. Everyone else has a second-hand opinion.

Hi,

Try right clicking (instead of the usual left) on the hex you want to sweep. You should find that you no longer need to change the homeport as the minesweeping taskforce will now only dock when it needs to refuel. [:)]

17 is the bigger challenge for Japan. You have the same goals as 19 but in 19 you get a lot more planes and ships. And the quality of your pilots tends to erode at a slower pace.

If you want to lay mines, use: Retirement Allowed

If you want to sweep mines, use: Do not retire.

If you use “Retirement Allowed” near a friendly port, this is called a defensive minefield. But your ships will still hit your own mines.

To be more precise,

To lay mines, you have to use ML (IJN) or DM and give them do retire orders, they will sail to the target hex and lay mines here. Or you may use subs, create a sub minelaying TF to have them loading mines and give them a target hex, they will sail there ,lay mines and return to home bases.
Mines can only be loaded in Truk, Brisbane and Noumea.

To sweep mines, you have to use MSW or DMS. With retire or do not retire orders, they will both sweep mines in their target hex and the hexes they sail across to go to it. But with no retire orders they will remain in the mined hex and continue to sweep mines.
DD, PC, PG and APD have also the hability to destroy some mines when they cross a hostile minefield. All ships will only sweep hostile minefields.

So the next question is: what is an hostile minefield ?

It is :
_ a minefield laid by the oponent side everywhere.
_ a minefield laid by you outside a base or dot you control at the time considered. An open sea minefield is a danger for both sides (except that your ships will usually sail around it). If you lay a minefield at one of your base and your opponent takes it without clearing the miens before, then your ships may hit the minefield there until you take the base back. And your MSW will sweep you mines also.

Minefields laid in open sea hexes disappear quickly (50% of the mines disappear each day) but you may lay them at any base, dot or hex will a small piece of land inside it without a dot or in shallow waters and they will remain forever.
