What exactly is "Bouncing"

Post by Maliki »

I got a chance to actually try the tutorial today..several days after i got the game[:@]

I set up all sorts of things,or at least thought i did. It's going to take me awhile to actually understand why some things happen as you plan them...and why all task forces retire to home port after they reach their initial destination[:'(]

Anyhoo..9 F4F's take on a force of Zeros and bettys.36 A6m..whatevers..and 12 Bettys.I thought the F4Fs were goners next thing i know i keep seeing the scroll zoom by...suprise..bounces..A6M destroyed..blah blah blah..6 A6M's manage to actually make it away from the slaughter[X(]The one Betty that actually made it through managed to put a torp on their only pass into a BB[X(][X(].Everything happend so fast i wasn't sure what was going on.

Can anyone explain this to me.Would 9 fighters,in all actuality be able to decimate a forceabout 6 times their size, even with suprise on their side?

Don't quote me as I'm not the air v air expert but isn't bouncing when one group of fighters dives down on their targets ? This give them a huge speed advantage. If I'm wrong can someone else explain this as I'm interested too.

I am not speaking from real life, but in this game, the difficulty level set has an impact on results, but its mostly the experience of the flight crew. As Mr. Frag put it the other day, a really experienced high morale flight crew in average plans up against poor experience flight crew in good planes, will usually result in the more experienced flight crew winning. Also remember if your difficulty level is set to historical, the game is not much of a challenge, or so I heard. :)

An air unit with good experience and/or good a/c "bouncing" an enemy force with low experience and/or inferior a/c can result in very heavy casualties being inflicted for very little loss in return.

Are you sure they were F4Fs?

If they were F6F's from the tutorial vs land based A6M5's from the tutorial, then yes they certainly could as the land based A6M5's have awful experience while the F6F pilots are top notch and the F6F is the superior a/c.

If they were FM-2's from the tutorial and they got to use "bounce" as the group tactic, then it's also possible but less likely. The FM-2 squadrons are pretty average but still a cut above their opponents. However, the FM-2 is inferior to the A6M5.

Have you confirmed that the A6M5's actually suffered the casualties reported?

Flying at a higher altiude and then swooping down with the sun behind you.
If you are attacking a bomber you would find a place where the defensive armanent is the least.

I went through the results pretty quick because i had other things to do this afternoon.[:@]The American aircraft were all carrier based, whatever is included in the tutorial scenario,as were the Japanese Aircraft.I don't know what really happened as i was playing around and had different altitudes for every carrier for AC from both sides.I didn't pay attention to the training of the two sides, and to tell you the truth i wasn't expecting any air to air combat.Like i said for the loss of 2 F4Fs,or whatever type the carrier based fighters are,the Japanese carrier fighter force was decimated.I'm not complaining, actually it was prety cool(even though i was commanding both sides as the tutorial instructs).I just have a hard time understanding, even with speed and suprise on their side, how a handfull of AC could inflict such a drubbing on their opponents.I checked intel after the combat phase was up,and despite the misleading numbers of the combat reports, they were pretty much in line with what the battlle animations showed.

"Bouncing" means that the attacker is moving into a good firing position preferably on the 6 o'clock of the other guy (as opposed to firing from whatever position). This takes time, and will not always work, but it will increase the kill rate. However, from what I have seen so far it is a good idea for the Japanese to hide their aircraft well from the Allies, even if they outnumber them! Reminds me of BTR!

Bouncing means that the attacker has both an energy advantage (usually height) and caught the enemy napping. Experienced pilots flying inferior planes can turn the tables with a bounce and cause some damage.
