Mine fell about the same time as yours Grotius, but it was because I decided to try extracting some troops in preparation to abandon it, and the evac went horribly wrong. [X(]

depends on both players.

IIRC, Raverdale lost his Singapore real early in a previous test because he made the mistake of attempting a counter-attack as the defender which failed. Under the new LCU rules, if the defender LCU"s launch an attack, successful or not, they lose the benefits of their FORT level for a full turn.

Well his attack failed disrupting his boys and negating his forts. Next turn Luskan was able to mop up. ouch.

Me of course... I took Singapore in my last game around early/mid Feb after a careful conservative approach designed to minimize casualties.

December 29th, 1941 in my current game...

But that's because I evacuated about 90% of my forces originally based in Malaya and shipped them up to Chandpur to defend India.

RE: When did "your" Singapore fall?

Post by brisd »

My currant Rising Sun scenario vs Allied AI historical setting, Singapore fell 1/30/42. There were approximately 35K troops defending vs about 70K consisting of 4 infantry divisions plus engineers and artilliary. Fell in about 4 days once battle commenced, minimal casualties for my troops. I think keeping the troops fresh, supplied and the enemy on the run so they can't recover is the key to capture of any major fortified city.

RE: When did "your" Singapore fall?

Post by chili614 »

It is February 16th and Singapore is still holding out. My strategy was to abandon all Malaysian bases immediately for a massive retreat to the fortress. A single large supply run from Karachi ate up about 8 or 9 AK's, but I was able to get 100K supplies to Singapore. I then moved everthing in India to Rangoon as soon as possible. I was able to repel the Rangoon attack and then counter attack down the peninsula. I just took Bangkok as the rear forces are pretty weak. The planes on Singapore have been clobbering the Japanese supply convoys and I moved the Dutch PT boats up to finish off anything unloading up the coast. So far, I have never once attacked with my Singapore forces and have just kept them in the defensive. Fortification level is currently 8 and the Japanese have about a 2:1 ratio of infantry and guns to me (with A LOT) more vehicles.

Sounds good, chili. In this first game against the AI, I decided to leave my troops in place just to see how it would play out, even though it's doubtless wiser to gather them in one place to make a stand. I noticed that Thayne uses this "house rule" in his impending PBEM game. In the same vein, I limited US moves in the first week of the war.

Man...don't think I'lll hang on for a Historical capture date of Singapore. Its December 27th and the Japanese Army just beat me back from my mountain defensive line about 4 hexs N of the city. Reinforcements got ransacked by enemy bombers coming down the strait. I got an Aussie Brigade loading at Darwin...but who knows if they will even make a dent. Those political points are tough before being able to grab other Commands units.

By the way, I had to go into the Editor and put my Ship the HMS Zulu in the game! (I command her over at WWII Online) With me as Captain of course. Unfortunately, the Zulu was lost in the Death Ride of the Prince of Wales and Repulse. Yeah I knew better...but just wanted a gut busting battle to kick things off.

All and all, this is one heck of a war game....its early in my experience...but man I think its the best hex based game I've ever seen.

Mine hasn't and in fact I'm now counter attacking and doing a good job of it.

First of all I set every plane I could to attack the convoys supplying the Japs and got every ship I could to intercept them also. That included bringing in all the Dutch and British ships into the shelter of Singapore's CAP and then racing out on a night bombardment and intercept.

Second, I emptied India of everyone of fighting age and put him on a ship plus 100K in supplies and whilst all of Malaya fell Singapore held out and I'm now attacking with 100K men against 60K of his. I hope to roll up Malaya and into Indo China.

This of course is only against the computer. I'd never dream to to try this against a human opponent, Well maybe, if it goes really well you can cut off any forces heading into India..... Then again, I'll have to ponder this some more.

That said, I don't like the idea of just abandoning Singapore as some seem to have done, I think there is far more value to holding it for as long as possible because until it goes the Japs won't touch the Dutch and thats where the resources are. The longer you hold, the more the strain on getting the job done for them which means they could just be forced into diverting crucial men and supplies to finish you off rather than send them somewhere else. Just my opinion.

I played Malaya fairly conservatively against the AI. I haven't moved any troops in or out. I have, however evac'd the air groups - save the Buffaloes. So far, I've just been pushed back into the city on 1/1/42 and have roughly 70k supply. We'll see how it goes but I'm not optimistic and doubt I'll make it past the 10th.

Against AI, hard difficulty:

Jan 5th. I could never get the troops organized in Singapore (they kept moving north to try to slow the Japanese advance rather than staying there and prepping/digging in). BTW I did NOT add supplies to Singapore (thinking that would only be gving them to the Japanese).

Bataan is still strong and solid looking a few days after the fall of Singapore, BTW. I have many more troops in Bataan than I ever got into Singapore and the Japanese have fewer.

Now that Singapore has fallen, the IJN has _lots_ of transports all around the Malay peninsula. I am shredding them with ABDA air units based in Sumatra and Java.

I am developing Kiska into a nice little base and I am thinking of invading one of the Northern most Shimas of the Home Islands see if that causes the enemy caniptions. Maybe stop some re-enforements from moving south.
