Looks like a Tambor Class Submarine. Either a 3 or 4inch gun forward, not structure to Conning tower.

It's a submarine. Photo taken by someone who forgot to remove the green filter from his lens.

From this perspective it looks very similiar to a German Typ IX uboat, especially the conning tower.

Its a type IX uboat, it has the flat deck, but the U-505 had a big American flag on it after capture ( a very nice idea when you were manning a U-boat in the Atlantic ) My guess being that Brady always manages to find the neatest photos, that this is a picture of a type IX that was loaned to the IJN or was used as a courier between Genrmany and Japan. Actually didn't Japan build a few typr IXs?

The Japanese didn't build any German subs, but the following Type IX's did enter Japanese service: U181,195,862,511,1224 became I501,506,502 and RO500,501.

After that picture was taken, when they fished the camera out of the ocean, do you think they fished out the camera man as well?

I don't see any guard rails or anything and that boat looks to be tipping a bit.
