Help - defending against Anzio landing

Post by coach3play4 »

I really need some help - I've played the German side over and over - defending against the allied landing at Anzio. I've tried everything - if I weaken the line, the allied closes in on me by turn 12-13, and I don't defeat enough of the landing force. If I dont weaken the line, i get nowhere against the landing, and cant save enough to win. I've heard some some German wins - I'm not asking for every move, just
an outline of a plan.
For example, where do you attack the landing - it seems there are too many hexes that dont allow for a good attack direction. Where do you take forces from the defense line?

Thanks

Well, my Strategy Goes like this :
Keep an Eye on your Eastern Forces, even though the terrain is nearly impassable.
Rush the HG Panzer, the 90.Panzer Grenadier Division, the 356.Infantry Division and maybe the 4.FallschirmJager division over to Anzio. Also, when rushing them think logically. Only defend where they are trying to break out and entrench as soon as possible. Even though the 3.Panzer Grenadier Division should be commited to the Gustav line with th 15.Panzer Grenadier, and Reichsgrenadier formations if the situation is dire, you could move them to Anzio. Rush the 16.SS Reichsfuhrer Panzer Grenadier Division over as well. Despite putting SP's around Anzio is a must, keep them out of Ship-Bombardment range.
In Short : Rush your HG Panzer Division, 356.Infantry Division, 90.Panzer Grenadier Division, 16.SS Reichsfuhrer Panzer Grenadier Division, 4.FallschirmJager division, reinforcing supporting elements near the 356.Infantry's Frozen point. ALL troops that arrive must be commited to Anzio.

Being the Allies, when your men land you will have no time to wait for them to refuel (if you must, only do this with independent Armoured Formations). You must press on, mainly Eastwards but must keep a front line West-East because the HG Panzer because of it's speed can Maneuver extremely well. Attempt a quick breakthrough of the Gustav Line and watch out for Movement of the 20.Panzer Division as in my game, they slaughtered my (?) 5th Canadian Infantry Division, and 2nd Canadian Infantry Division. (Btw, to SSG, in your Husky scenario, the 2nd (Can) Infantry Div. has a Reconnaissance Regiment, is this meant to be right?)
You should focus your men in the south extensively and use all Bombard-Capability artillery/naval artillery to destroy the Strongpoints of the Reichsgrenadier Division (Especially the Meier Panzergruppe Regiment). This scenario is about speed, it is shortest of the lot and is the battle with the most awful terrain in the Italy Map. Good Luck guys!
You'll need it.
