Jan 1940 Russia Vs the Finns

Here we are again once again defending against the Finns. As the men call them the ghosts of the plains. They seem to come right up from hell. Masters of camoflauge they are. There ski troops fly across the landscape like white ghosts, Silent and deadly. Visability is good 750 yards with a snowstorm raging. But all in all a very fine day for glory. Once and for all we will show them who is in control here.

We have set up a 3 company front running north to south across the full map. there is a large clearing with us set up in the tree line on the west side of this. The finns will be coming across this clearing from the woods on the east side.Once the enemy has been sighted coming out of the woods our heavy guns will begin a very heavy bombardment on the tree line which has been zeroed in ahead of time. The big guns will be doining some lumber jacking today. As the vis is short our tanks are sitting right in amongst our infantry to give them as much help as possible. Have laid a few mines to hinder the Finns if they get to our company. Did not get very many from supply so they are spread out rather thin. Dont really know much about Finnish armor dont know if we should expect some are not. Just in case they do come have moved our ATG up amongst the front line as well.

We are well dug in and should not have too much trouble with them today. Our men are up for this and rarin to go. the cold does not seem to be a factor with them. A lot of our troops are from siberia and man that is one cold place. Was checking around a few minutes ago checking on tthe men and heard a bunch of laughter when a joke was told about the Finns. This is very incourageing when they are so loose. If there hands are steady and there eyes are clear thats all that is neccessary.

1125 Hours.

The Finns begsnt to emerge from the woods 15 minute ago almost on cue. The leading edge seems to be made up of all ski troops. Man they fly across the snow. They hit us heavy in the north and middle. Not too much going on in the south some stray units it seemed have veered off from the main attack. They were taken care of very fast by our entrenched men in the south with next to no loss of life on our side.

Our big guns have begun to lay in there shots on the woods edge were the enemy came out of. Lot of fires and trees being knocked to splinters there. Have saw no mech units yet at all nore have we heard any moving around. Doesnt seem as tho they have any mech with them just thounsands of those damm ski troops flying across the snows surface. There must be at least 7 companys of them coming at us. They are hard to hit they move so quick although some of our HMGs have found there mark. So far our losses are estimated at around 20 men down so far. No loss of armor as no heavy stuff has come into fight them. Some 76.2 shells have been falling but it is scaterred out and has done no damage. I dont see how we can lose today they just done have the equipment to hurt us that bad. This will be another great victory for Mother Russia.

the Finns have given up after only 45 minutes of fighting. We lost 32 men while they lost 1234 men. Once again they came at us with no Armor at all. Not once did they break thru our defenses. Our big guns were devastating today. The 203s were right on target for the whole battle. They came in mass frontal assault. The big guns tore huge holes in there lines.

This part of the war is over for us. We have been ordered back to Russia to train and regroup. We will be quartered in the Kursk area for now. Hitler is becoming even more aggressive in his speeches. We figure he will be headed towards france next. Seems to be the logical choice as he will need there ports. And we dont believe the french are ready for him what with all there political bickering betweeen there leaders. Heck I dont think they even have a bonnifide military leader in the country qualified to stop the german advance if that is where they head next. Our leaders are talking as if they will make some kind of pact with germany so we may never have to go to war with the little dictator. Suits me just fine as if war becomes a reality it will go on for a long time and be one of the worst wars of all time. Im sure it will surpress even the big war in lives lost and sheer horror.
