1920's Fighters Against Ships.

Post by Tankerace »

Just a note I'd like to put here on this subject. I know some of WitP's house rules will creep into WPO. But one I hope is done away with is the no fighters strafing/bombing at 100 feet. In WW2, this is a gamey tactic. However, in 1922 Billy Mitchell proposed this exact tactic.

Billy Mitchell, in his tests in 1921, figured pursuit planes would strafe the enemy decks to kill or pin down the AA gunners, letting the bombers attack unmolested. In fact, in his attack on the destoyer G-102 on July 13, 12 planes did exactly this. Now I will grant you that by 1925 and on this would be suicide, bu until thin it would be a viable tactic, and game or not in line with thinking of the time. Since all carriers are assigned only 2 groups, the best way to simulate this would be to split the fighter group into 3 units. the First can be on 90 Cap and escort, the 2nd as escort and 0 cap, and the third at 100 feet, no cap.

It is a bit of departure from WitP tactics, but this was (at least in 1921) more or less doctrine (such as can be considered doctrine in those days)

Kamikaze's cannot be activated in WPO scenarios. However, the ruleset is still there, in case anyone wants to create their own little scenario with kamikazes activated at start (via the editor).

I never looked into this rule in WiTP. (I usually restart the game before Kamikaze's get used.)

How much damage would an aircraft do to the ships?

Does the game treat all (kamikaze) aircraft the same damage-potential wise?

Not sure, but truthfully, they might bag a destroyer, but that's it. Still, I left it in for thsoe who want REALLY what if scenarios.

Besides, it would be easier to leave it in than to take it out... [;)]

No. I wanted to add them, but I couldn't find a good way to do it without it coming across as an afterthought. That's not to say they never will be in, but that I wasn't able to add them in a way I found satisfactory.

The closest way I could come was creating various squadrons with 1 plane each. So if you have 15 Squadrons flying a particular derigible(sp) with a replacement rate of 1. So if you loose three in a month, you only get one back. It would have to be a "Patrol" aircraft with long endurance and slow speed. With work I think it could happen, but right now I didn't find it feasible or working well enough to include.

Start them out maybe as coastal and or naval Reconisance aircraft
as well as ASW and anti strafing aircraft.
or even if they only added a defensive or detection modifier for the hex
they were in and or 1 adjacent hex to them they would at least be a
historical representation in the game..[;)]
I would love to use them as pickets for fleet detection and
ground detection.
Would be a shame to not have them, but at least in the future
you may add them...
