I cannot afford to have Mogami sail up with 300,000 men on APs to attack Noumea,

That is exactly what I would do in this game if I were him. You would lose Noumea and all army VPs you have there (I assume 1000-some VPs) plus 1900-some VPs for Numea itself.

Or I would lose the whole game right then and there. As I did once already, in what would be "lunacy game" had we used that term when we were starting it [:D] I landed 8 divisions worth of stuff on Caledonia during March and April, and was still unable to take the place. He had air superiority over Caledonia, so I wasn't able to even remove the troops I comitted to this idiotic fight. 8 IJA divisions in Caledonia semi-autonomous POW camp. Game over for stupid Oleg, who waited too long.

But you don't have as much troops as this guy had, and with commitment this big I think I would take Noumea from you, inflicting hurt in the process.

CV battle would not have to happen, but if you accept it, odds are you'd lose.

Mog should have landed at La Foa or Koumac earlier, with brigade or couple Naval Guards/SNLFs + base unit, thus he would have LBA base there to provide CAP for reinforcements. Now he depends on CV air for CAP over invasion force.

BTW do you think he knows how many troops you have at Noumea? Question is - will he split his Manila troops (he may do that if he has wrong estimate of your forces), or use them in one big lump on Caledonia...

Mogami once got a message saying there were 30,000 men in Noumea.

I don't know how many men I have there, how would he?[:D]

It is impossible to predict what will happen at New Caledonia, we are past the period where Japan can simply smash everything in its path though Mogami can certainly launch a big offensive if he wishes to.

Do you think he can beat 6 Allied divisions behind big forts with 300,000 guys? It is fewer troops than the Phillipines but much better supply, air support and troop quality.

I agree that he has an advantage in a straight up CV battle, but that is not what he gets in New Caledonia. I would not fight this way for an Atol or an isolated base, but this is 3 bases right next to eachother with airpower roughly equal to the airpower he has on his CV fleet.

It is possible that going for Koumac instead of Efate might have worked. But it is also possible that you would be reading about Marines chasing an SNLF through the jungle after retaking the base.

If Mogami does send 300,000 men to New Caledonia the British are going to send 200,000 to Burma and Thailand. Of course given past experience they will probably be stopped by movement bugs, but if they don't it will be quite a fight.

China

More small air raids. 32 Mohawks and 16 Hawks are planning to sweep Nanchang. Last we checked there were 12 Oscars flying CAP.

India/Burma No changes. I have started to count forces that could be used to counter attack. I am thinking that I could send 3 divisions, 3 armored brigades, 3 infantry brigades, a bunch of artillery and a few divisions of Chinese. This would leave India strong but it is not a huge force. This effort would start after it was clear that Mogami was pushing in the South Pacific.

Russia : Nothing going on but I still get messages saying that the Japanese are planning to attack the place.

South Pacific
Still the place where the action is. KB is sailing around but not near New Caledonia. The Allies are still slipping troops and supplies in, the last CD unit starts unloading at Koumac in a day or two. No air combat and no sea combat planned. The US CV fleet is South of Nandi heading South West no way am I fighting a CV battle now. The British CVs and the Hermes-Long Island group will meet the US CVs soon.

Prince of Wales is in Aukland with 8 sys damage, there are a number of ships there with over 5 sys that I am hoping will repair at least a little.

The Japanese neglected to bomb Port Moresby for a few days and the engineers fully repaired the base and support. There is now 111 AV there so the Allies flew in 90 fighters.

On the 15th the Japanese returned for thier regular bombing raid. It did not go according to plan.

Day Air attack on Port Moresby , at 53,91

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 50
G3M Nell x 73
G4M1 Betty x 84

Allied aircraft
Kittyhawk I x 27
P-36A Mohawk x 39
P-40E Warhawk x 18

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 24 destroyed, 1 damaged
G3M Nell: 10 destroyed, 11 damaged
G4M1 Betty: 22 destroyed, 11 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
Kittyhawk I: 13 destroyed, 1 damaged
P-36A Mohawk: 8 destroyed, 21 damaged
P-40E Warhawk: 9 destroyed

Allied ground losses:
15 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Airbase hits 5
Airbase supply hits 7
Runway hits 32

Actual air losses for both sides were 31 Allied, 60 Japanese over the day and almost all of them were at PM. The Allies are kind of scraping the bottom here, a group of P35s was flown in to push the numbers back up, but the Japanese can't really afford this either. 24 of thier losses were Zeros which is a good chunk of the 50 planes that flew as escort.

This is the first clear cut Allied victory in air to air combat so far in the game. Though it is only a tactical victory is shows that the clock is ticking for Japan. It also keeps me on track to destroy more planes than I lose in May. That is another sign that the Allies are starting to put things together.

I am not sure I can maintain air superiority over PM, but if the Japanese take heavy casualties fighting over New Guinea then they will not have the XP 90 airgroups they need to gain control of the air over New Caledonia. We will see if the Japanese come back with more on the 16th or if they choose to give me control of the air over PM.

In the Phillipines the number of ships in Manila bay is reported to be 164. US subs have tracked convoys going North past Luzon and a few inconclusive attacks have been launched by submarines and Japanese ASW forces.

A fast update showing an important change in the Phillipines. Everything else is pretty calm, down in the South Pacific KB continues to move between Suva and Noumea. He is not launching air attacks on the merchant shipping near KB, instead he is putting his Zeros on 80-90% CAP and hoping I will commit aerial suicide prefferably with my CV based Wildcats.

We shall see.

Mogami still has multiple options.

He can go for India (my favorite since I don't think he has a chance there)

He can send some troops to take Burma and others to take New Caledonia, try for the 4 to 1 but also set up for defense.

He can send a small force to the South Pacific, hold me there and try for 4 to 1 in Russia

He can send everything to New Caledonia

If he chooses the last option I will also send everything, and the war may be short.

Tom, when I see the above map my first reaction would be to send a PBY squadron to Cebu to gather more information about shipping moves.

Cebu has no base force, but I am considering it anyway. The two TFs in the picture are actually on different courses. I have PBYs in Sumatra, and I will probably put some into Bulla in a day or two.

Koumac just got its Marine CD unit and another RCT is busy avoiding KB but still closing in on New Caledonia. That will put me up to 2 Divisions, 2 Brigade/RCT, a Battalion, 2 Marine Defense battalions (they have some infantry and a few tanks) and a 36 gun CD unit. The next unit to arrive will be the Australian 6th division, then 2 more RTCs and another big base force. Some of those units are either just over or just under 17 days away so there is something of a race on.

The other thing is that Mogami cannot land without KB in support, so if he is cruising around now he will need to re-arm and refuel in a week or two. That may buy me a few days, which is a very good thing for me.

Finally KB has to fight the forces on Noumea before the landings go in and that will weaken it. That is when I will hit back with my CVs. I may get the surface forces involved before the CVs come in because I can put them under CAP of 200 fighters.

I have 7 BBs 3 US, 3 old British, 1 new British in the area. Mogami lost Fuso, Kongo hit a mine and Ise ate a torpedo recently so he has less of a big gun edge than one might expect. Due to losses in air-sea battles and the recent battle of Luganville the Japanese have fewer cruisers available than the Allies. I have 7 fleet and two light carriers, he has 6 fleet (or maybe 7) carriers and 4 CVLs.

So he has a small edge in BBs and CVs, I have an edge in Cruisers and LBA.

China

Sporadic flights by small numbers of Allied planes and the occasional large scale bombing raid on a Chinese base by Japan. No changes in the front line, but when the Northen cities get their forts up to level 9 I plan to form a mobile army or two and try something, maybe push on the coast.

Burma
On May 17th the Japanese caught another bombing raid with a group of 30 Oscars. This time the Hurricanes did Ok, shooting down 5 with a loss of 10. Of course the Hurricanes were not supposed to be there at all, I forgot to set the CAP to 0 range. So a switch in plans; Mandalay is now home to 2 Wellington groups that fly over Moulmein bombing every night. At least that is what they say they are doing...

Two Chinese divisions have been flown out of Mandalay the 93rd and the 38th, starting in two days the 55th division will begin flying in. 55th is at 160 AP and 93% of OB, the other two divisions were at 90 AP or so. As more Chinese divisions come to full strength the remaining Chinese in Burma will be flown out and fresh troops sent in.

I did send some PBYs up to Cebu on the 19th, they spotted a number of 10-12 ship convoys two of which are right off shore invading![:@]

There are no huge 300,000 man invasion convoys in the Phillipines right now, and the place is about to go dark until the return of Allied forces some time in the future.

South Pacific

KB came pretty far South and launched airstrikes on the 17th. They caught two tankers and a convoy of 3 AKs sinking the tankers and 2 of the AKs. Allied ships had gotten away for the most part and KB steamed North, they are now near Efate.

The Marine CD unit is now completely unloaded at Koumac and an RCT will unload in two or 3 days. The next sets of troops are 1 to 2 weeks away and include another big base force, 2 RCT, artillery and a Division from Australia. If they get ashore Noumea will be a very tough nut to crack, AV will be 450 in 3 airfields, forts will be high, supply plentiful and ground troops numerous. I realize this may be getting repetetive but if Mogami is coming for Noumea then this really is a race, just like the Manila supply watch. Should I start posting the AP, supply, AV and fort levels for Noumea every turn?

The Allied CV TFs are all South of Noumea along a line that runs from Fiji to Aukland. They are currently on an return to base course heading for Aukland, with any luck they may repair some sys damage. The US fleet is in good shape, only 1 ship at 4 sys, the British CVs are about the same but the Prince of Wales is at 8 sys and the several cruisers are at 6 and 7. I would really like to see that go down some, especially PoW but it does not seem to be happening.

Over on the West Coast HMS Repulse has been repairing very quickly and is now down to 7 sys. North Carolina is due is 30 days, she will form a TF with Repulse and head South, giving the Allies a second 28 knot BB TF.

CD Guns: 9

La Foa
Supply: 10178
Airfield: 2
Fort: 2
AV: 45
Ap: 397
CD Guns: 8

Noumea
Supply: 159044
Airfield: 5
Fort: 8
AV: 251
Ap: 339

For what it's worth I think Mogami waited too long if he was going after either New Caledonia or India. Gonna be fun to watch if he goes in swinging though.[:D]

India is almost 10 times stronger than Noumea, 6000 AP to 850, more forts airbases etc. I think your right about the sub continent, as I think I mentioned I have started looking at the possiblity of counter attacking out of India in a few months time.

Noumea does have some things in its favor, a better airforce especially at longer range and the possiblity of intervention by the Allied fleets.

One other note, Mogami pulled the air units out of Luganville. I have had a lot of trouble getting bombers to fly but when they do there is no opposition. Efate still has some Oscars.

Hmmmmmm. Guess he must feel he is vulnerable to non stop bombardments like the Japanese players love to use given the damage state of his surface forces.

I think so, he has a lot of damaged surface forces, at some point I will post the sunk list for Japan.

I have lost a lot of old BBs (for stupid reasons too, but lets not dwell on it.) but otherwise my Navy has done pretty well.

The last battle cost him over 120 planes, mostly destroyed on the ground, I don't think he wants a repeat of that. Then we had the surface battle that neither side was expecting and he got pretty badly chewed up again. He would have to put BBs on gaurd to stop my bombardment attacks but those would be vunerable to air attack.

It is almost rock-paper-scissors and it is a tough problem for both of us. But the more time that passes the more my position improves so I am willing to play catious for now and hope he accidentally impales himself on my defense.

Tom, what kind of fighters you have that have greater max alt than zeroes and have a sizeable bomb load? As it's a no limit game, you can use them for unopposed dive bombing

If he is in May 1942 - not any, i think.

Even the "unopposed" dive bombers take flak when they dive down to 2000 feet.

Hmm. Forgive me, please, but I would like to ask what the repair point value of Aukland is. If it is less than 50, than capital ships are gonna have a hard time repairing there. If that is the case, try using Sydney (I think) instead to fix the Prince of Wales.

Also, at start the Allies are kinda short on AR's. Did you convert some at the beginning of the game? I like to convert a bunch, and stick them in Sydney, Colombo, and Diamond Harbor (if it is not in range of Japanese LBA).

yes they do but only once (during the dive) while those flying at 15000 feet will take once AA at their normal height and once during the dive. And I don't know if the AA fire at "attack height" is not the one that is fired after the attack.

You are correct about Aukland the shipyard will not speed repair. My problem is that PoW is at 8 sys which significantly slows the ship but she is needed in the area and 8 is not enough to justify taking her to Pearl Harbor for repairs. Aukland is the nearest safe base with a decent port so she is there. Repulse took 25 sys worth of bombs on the first day of the war, I sent her to San Francisco immediately and she is now at 5 sys damage.

I hate the sys damage system, especially the fact that larger ships are more difficult to repair. But it comes with the game so there we are.

Day 1 of the war I converted 8 AKs to ARs and some AKs to MLE and other types. Since then I have also converted some British AKs to ARs as well. The first of them will become available soon. I speeded up my CV refit at Frisco by moving the 3 ARs from Pearl to the West Coast, they will go back after more ARs arrive.
