Realistic Supply query

Post by decaro »

It was too easy in HTTR for units far away and removed -- if not outright cut-off -- from their supply divisions. I'm curious as to how the new COTA resupply will work, i.e., like the Decisive Battles color code supply map?

Can't spend too long on this as we're all rushing to get the game to you. But here is a picture of a base and the lines of supply out to it's charges. You will see the different colours, they indicate whether supply can be made or not depending on the cut-off or otherwise status of the units. There are also lines from the unit back to its' base again coloured to indicate supply status.
Hope this gives a small idea of the information available, meanwhile I'm pretty sure that this info has been shown here before. Do a serch in this forum with "supply".
Is it similar to DB? No. Is it more realistic than DB? You bet. Does it mean you have to micro manage supplies? No. Does it mean that you have to plan with supply in mind? Sure does.
Cheers
Ray

Hmmmmm - does this imply that we'll have to spend more time watching our base units? By that I mean that in HTTR I frequently use them for fodder or to hold ground in harms' way. Will a shot up base be far less effective at resupplying units?

BK, we're on the same boat. Time to use those bases a bit more realistically I guess.

Yes you will. No more committing them to the front line I'm afriad. In fact one of my tasks today is to further tweak the code for deploying the Bases. The AI by and large will try and deploy them behind your lines, away from enemy controlled areas, enemy occupied areas and enemy firepower influence and close to roads. Of course you can always deploy them directly but keep them safe. If within effective enemy firepower influence they will not despatch supplies. Being forced to rout off is disaster.[:)]

Bagged!!

Post by Arjuna »

Check out this screen dump taken from Day 4 of the Tutorial 2 scenario - Setback and Rebound. The Allies have pulled off a lovely envelopment manouvre, bagging the bulk of the 33rd Pz Regt and 433 Inf Regt in the Sperkhios River bend. I have turned on perfect intel and selected the 433rd Inf Regt Base. As you can see all the supply lines to the forces in the bend are red ( ie cut ). The Unit Info Box displays current Ammo - the darker the less ammo they have. These guys are on the way out.

At this stage there is roughly 1200 men and 70 AFVs. By games end ( in 20 hours time ) many had surrendered but still 450 men and 40 AFVs were still holding out. Another day and they would have all gone.

Kudos!
Out of supply units: will the AI opponent attempt to put them back in supply (break the envelopment)?
This is gonna be a lovely game!

When I saw 'Bagged!' in the forum list I thought you meant the last bugs!!

This looks good though. Was the encirlement maneuver done by you as the Player, Arjuna?

The whole aspect of being able to cut off units will add a great element to the game.

Yep I gave the orders to the Allies. The Germans did try and break back to Lamia attempting to run up the road heading north along the east side of the river. They did so at night and I had to race some extra AT units to blow back the German armour in the nick of time.[:)]

Thanks Dave for the response.
It would be nice if the players get punished (less victory points or whatever) if they have units out of supply at the end of the scenario. In that way the game would avoid gamey tactics like a batallion rush into a distant objective, with the unit holding the objective but completely cut-off from the main force.

Ditto Chelco. I'd even pay now for the current beta release and then pay again for the retail release!! Now that's desperate! (And knowing my luck it'd be released the following day!) [:D]

LOL.
Someday we will see a post that the beta test is finished, but they now have to write the manual. That's gonna kill me... [:D]

Cheers,
I don't think a cut-off battalion will have a chance of holding into a distant objective unless the defensive player has also made big mistakes himself. And if he's able to hold the objective against the odds, then this heroic stand shouldn't be penalized!

Oh, I agree with that.
But many times at HttR I got decisive victories that left me thinking: "I am glad I have not to sort this mess after the time the scenario ends!". What I'm trying to say is that then new supply rules give the designers a unique oportunity to reward gameplay that focuses more in dislodging the enemy's ability to fight and less on valuable real state.
But anyway, I'm ready to take the game as it is now. Bring it on, Panther!

I wouldn't worry too much. One way or another, there'll be a manual. If it's a print manual, I just pray the typeface is a bit larger than HttR. My eyes still haven't refocused since week I read that one[:D].

BTW, I like the interface improvements. I can glean what most of it is, but what's the "R" next to the speed controls at the top?
