There's very little I can do, at present, to recoup this loss. Shikuka has no proper airfield and no aviation support. It will simply have to suffer. Operational art is, at the last remove, the art of linking acceptances and declinations of combat to further one's strategic aims. Here and now my strategic aims require my force be elsewhere. It is annoying to look at 300,000 tons of supplies being "burned" through these attacks but c'est la vie. I'll have a year to ship the required supplies there once the Soviet Union falls.

Allied losses are extremely heavy with my outnumbered CAP claiming 30 enemy planes destroyed but those which get through wreak havoc on my CVLs. I forsee a lot of yard time ahead for these ships. The lightest-damaged has 60 sys damage and one has over 90. Flooding and fires are in the 20s to 40s and most can only travel at 5 knots or less. This has hurt.

Still, leson learnt. I'll shove them into a couple of air combat TFs and try to sneak them south. I'm betting that Jagdfluger will try to port attack tomorrow and will not have any of his bombers on naval attack. In the meantime my CVEs and CVA Yamato are racing north. With just a little luck they'll be able to provide these damaged CVLs with cover from the 2nd day onward.

I doubt I will land behind him. I don't need to take that risk. I will most definitely mount a maskirovka operation behind Bombay, threatening to cut off half of his army etc and may even land a division or two in blocking positions if the time and terrain is favourable but I don't think I'll be mounting a 5 or 6 division deep amphibious pincer. What would a maskirovka operation look like? Well, all my CVAs and CVEs mounting loads of fighters, covered by my BBs and DDs and escorting 40 to 60 APs and AKs. That number of transports could easily carry an additional 5 divisions, will force the Allied air forces to meet that threat, may lure the Allied surface fleet out into the open - currently it is sitting under the aircover of Bombay just waiting to sprint down to Pangim and bombard the airfield there, an opportunity I will give it over the next couple of days. If it takes it I will get in good strikes against their battleline- and will force Jagdfluger to keep a large reserve to cover likely landing sites. I will commit this maskirovka at the same time that my main force is thrusting through Central India.

The Zero pool is still empty. My heavy losses of grounded Zeroes at Hilo ( when you bombed me there ) have cost me very heavily. I've lost 365 Zeroes, including 105 on the ground ( the ones lost in the bombing of Hilo). So, at present I still haven't managed to replace my losses on my CVs or convert all of my CVs from Claudes to Zeroes etc. In addition my IJN land-based fighter groups are only finally being brought back up to full strength and aren't quite there yet.

I think the best illustration of this would be that the 3 CVLs, 4 CVEs and 1 CVA ( which usually carries 42 Zeroes) covering my Indian Invasion are able to muster a sum total of 37 Zeroes between them with 34 of those Zeroes being on the CVA. The 3 CVLs and 4 CVEs can muster 3 Zero fighters between them . I do have two land-based daitai but they are both needed to cover Pangim from future air raids as 6 of my divisions rely on Pangim for their life-line

I think it is reasonable to say that most other people would have called off the invasion of India after being reduced to such paltry numbers of fighters ( about 28% of what these carriers should actually carry) but, as you know, I enjoy walking the tightrope so the invasion is still definitely on - especially as I think I must be reducing the Allied forces in India to impotence by now. The forces in India are losing up to 50 planes per day in their attacks on my forces and I just don't think that they can sustain anything close to that loss rate for long.


In any case, short answer to your question, I still desperately need a month of decreased activity to allow me to round out my current fighter units and to begin converting some of the new ones. I have 4 land-based fighter daitai flying Zeroes and that's it. 1 is now covering the Soviet Union, 2 are covering India and 1 is at Hilo. I don't even have enough to assign one to the DEI and have been forced to make do with Rufes at Kendari instead.

This was just a test-run to check feasability. I am waiting to gather a Sentai of 30 Me-264s so that I can mount a prolonged bombing campaign. I also need to move up my capture of the DEI if I am to support my two massive bombing campaigns at Hilo and Midway - why massive? Well, with a payload of about 16,000 or so each Me-264 sortie is going to use up about 8 tons of supply per sortie, with 30 planes flying per day thats 240 tons PER DAY for this bombing campaign. OUCH! It'll be almost as expensive for me to close Midway as closing it will be for the Allies.

Not bad Colombo drops from Level 5 fortifications to Level 3 in just one attack. The main problem is that the Allied troops I had expelled from Trincomalee have now walked back onto the rail-line, cutting it and cutting the forces from Colombo off from supply. As a result I have to order some of my shipping into Colombo harbour to drop supplies off so that I can attack again. That really sounds like an all-volunteer mission to me but in the IJN everyone is assumed to be willing to volunteer for everything so 6 ships were picked and sent on their way.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/17/42

This posting brings us completely up to date with the game so far. Unfortunately we had to redo the first 17th January turn as one of those damned movement bugs struck and instead of my troops at Poona pulling back towards Pangim they actually advanced FROM a contested hex INTO an allied-controlled hex - something which should not be possible - AND, to cap it all, not only did they do the impossible but they did it in a direction AWAY from Pangim. They actually advanced TOWARD DELHI [8|][8|][8|].

The pity was that I had unleashed my ASW hammer at Singapore and managed to sink 5 submarines in 1 day, guess that makes me an ASW Ace In A Day eh? [:D] I also managed to do a few very nice intercepts using Zeroes and Mikes on LRCAP. Jagdfluger also took advantage of the re-run to LRCAP a few places I'd hit the day before and managed to hit a Sonia raid I had forgotten to change so I more than doubled my total losses of Sonias so far in just one day. All of the above ( his using info from the previous turn to better plan on the do-over ) is, obviously, completely fair game. I'm just mentioning it to show the downside of rerunning turns. Still, overall, the fact that I only killed 3 subs today instead of the 5 on the previous running of the turn and suffered far heavier air losses is more than balanced out by the fact that the 4 divisions at Poona are no longer haring off suicidally across the Indian countryside.

The 37 Zeroes strike again. By this stage attrition has removed all but the very best pilots from this CV TF and they are facing Allied forces which are rapidly running out of both high-performance fighters and experienced pilots. The end result is a massacre in which the Japanese pilots gain more and more experience at little cost while the Allies are forced to adopt poorer and poorer aircraft types flown by less and less experience pilots. It rapidly adopts a self-perpetuating, logarithmic quality just as does, occasionally, happen in real life.

Even with this slaughter some of the Hudsons still got through but were too rattled to score any hits.

My forces at Efateville are destroyed. Now the question is what to do about Luganville. It would be nice to hold a base there and build it up to Level 4 but I'm not certain if I have the forces available, at the moment, to succeed in this goal. For the moment I order 8 Mavis to begin airlifting in a Brigade of troops from Lunga but I'll have to think on this over the next couple of days.

For those interested in these things I will point out the following regarding the relative correlation of torpedo attack plane power...

The Allies get 42 twin-engined torpedo bombers per month JUST as replacements per month in December and January 42. They get substantially more than this if one includes the reinforcement squadrons which appear. In addition from january 42 they also get 142 Avengers per month.

So, while they get slightly fewer twin-engined torpedo bombers they get at least double but more probably triple of the very useful single-engined torpedo bombers ( Kates vs Avengers). So, as you can see the Allies do get a very potent punch. They just have to be very careful not to be wasting it by throwing it into the teeth of CV CAP with inadequate fighter protection. If I were in Jagdfluger's shoes I'd use the twin-engined torpedo bombers to go after commerce in the DEI with most of the single-engined planes being used to go head to head with the enemy fleets - the reason being that I would have about 3.5 times the ability to replenish my Avenger losses than my twin-engined losses. Obviously though a couple of squadrons of Avengers should be used to hop between the Level 2 and 3 airfields in order to spread the Japanese defences even thinner. Jagdfluger doesn't seem to be doing much with the Avengers, as of yet.

Actually I think things are going well for you ( bar the drastric losses of Zeros), as you stated not many players would use carriers at less that 50% fighter strength. Just makes this one heck of a game .

My bad. All I mean is that it illustrates the sort of spiral you can get into where one side's pilot and plane quality is low and the other's is high. The side with the advantage tends to shoot down very large numbers of the enemy for little loss, resulting in major experience gains ( and making the next battles all the more one-sided) while the side at the disadvantage tends to have even less experienced pilots flying even worse planes ( assuming their production can't keep pace with losses). So today's combat outcomes are the logarithmic and inverse bits and the sequelae therefrom is what happens over time.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/18/42

Yesterday I saw what I took to be the Royal Navy battleline moving in to bombard Pangim BUT I knew that if I went north to attack them as they fled I would leave my damaged CVLs uncovered. Being an aggressive SOB I figured that, at most, I'd only lose 1 additional CVL ( I figure that one is so badly damaged it will sink no matter what I do, one is 50/50 and the other should survive) but could remove 3 BBs from the equation. And since I'm thinking ahead to a British counter-invasion in 1943 I want to do whatever I can to destroy the ships they will use to force their way through my torpedo-bomber strikes - these ships being their BBs and CAs and CLs, many of which upgrade to be quasi-CLAAs by 1943.

At that point in time another CVL won't matter much but depriving the Allies of 3 BBs and 3 to 6 CLs and CAs will help me immensely.

Add in the fact that most of my air to air losses are over my own bases and CVs and really my only 100% unrecoverable losses are due to FlAK and while they are heavy they should begin to fall as Me-264s begin to enter service.

Good to see you here. As re: what if's not being your thing. Cool, each to their own and all that. As to my native language etc. I'm half-Belgian, was born there and lived there till I was 7 so I only picked up English when I moved over to Ireland at that stage. Thus Flemish is my first language, Irish second, then English and then French. Obviously English is the lingua franca of Ireland but whichever way you look at it I only picked it up from 7 onwards.

I know it well enough to get the highest grade in my end of High School exams ( which something like 200 out of the 60,000 people sitting that standardised test get) BUT, and this is the interesting bit, I still have trouble with some very basic things, e.g. In Belgium the level of a building which is at street level is the first floor, in Ireland and England it is the ground floor and the level above it is first in Ireland but second in Belgium, when I'm tired I tend to think in Flemish and sometimes can't find the English words and I NEVER got the hang of what made someone a cousin or a niece or once or twice removed etc . Obviously the end of high school exam tested your knowledge of Shakespeare etc and not that kind of stuff or I wouldn't have done nearly as well .

To be honest I think that the reason I have relatively good English is not being taught it in school or chatting with friend but, rather, the fact that when I was 7 or 8 and learning English I read a lot of the Classics - Homer, Greek and Roman Fables, Japanese mythology etc - in very old, old books. Many of these books were from the 1920s as that is all the crappy old school library had available. Still, the language used in these books was far richer, more varied and erudite than the language used either commonly or in scholarly works nowadays and in reading it I picked up that language. So, my advice to people learning English has always been to find a really old (1920s or 1930s) book of fables and read it. You'll see far richer language than you will nowadays and you'll be reading stories which are applicable even today ( as all the fables really were were thinly veiled lessons to the youth of Greece and Italy to teach them how society wished them to behave etc.

And he has the interior well-garrisoned as well. Good, time to keep up the nuisance drops so as to tie up lots of Brigades in interior security. My thinking here is that parachuting some commandoes in behind enemy lines with orders to interdict their supply lines, blow important bridges etc would be a good idea - not so much in terms of damage done but more in terms of forcing the Allies to keep garrisons at all the important bridges etc. Unfortunately I can't simulate that properly in-game so dropping onto enemy bases is the next best way to force the Allies to maintain reasonable garrisons.

At the end of the day the Royal Navy battleship Warspite finally rolls over and sinks. The rest of the force will make it into Bombay harbour but they won't make it much farther [8D]


What is most important about this is that the first two times Jagdfluger has tried anything significant in terms of naval counter-strokes ( the landings at Midway and the bombardment at Pangim) he has suffered heavy losses. Hopefully this will make him more circumspect in future.

Well despite all of the losses suffered so far the British in India are still able to deliver a solid twin-engined punch. This is excellent as I think it shows that the Allies are not underpowered in this mod. After all how many Allied players in stock, CHS or RHS are able to mount hundred bomber raids the day after losing over 200 planes and after 43 days of war have cost them over 3,500 planes destroyed?

Now my main problem becomes what I'm going to do about this force? I think I will simply consolidate in the south-west of India and then place all my land-based Zeroes in Pangim with a view to enacting an LRCAP ambush somewhere. Even a single day's ambush by 40 Zeroes ought to cut into these bomber numbers significantly.

Batavia falls precisely as scheduled. On the morning that it fell a large Japanese troop convoy arrived in the harbour carrying 3 Royal Thai Army divisions and an RTA Brigade. This should bolster my AV on Java to over 1200 and allow me to sequestre Soerabaja quickly and effectively. Also of interest is the fact that the measures I took to prevent this convoy being attacked were succesful. Thus I've validated something I can use in future amphibious operations in the DEI.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/21/42

Yesterday I saw some merchants beginning to try to make their escape from Karachi. It looks like about 10 merchants are running for it, 10 more are staying and about 15 warships are bottled up in Bombay Harbour. That's another 35 ships to add to my toll and will put me comfortably over 400 sinkings by the end of January... assuming they try to escape. Even if they don't try and escape by the end of the month I'll still be able to collect them whenever they do. My precautions to be sure of this are as follows:

1. 20,000 tons of fuel in a replenishment TF will ensure my ships can stay on station for the forseeable future while a quick dash in to Cochin to replenish my sorties and air groups once I have a couple of Level 4 airfields with Bettys set up will make the cordon watertight. The best thing Jagdfluger could do now that I have him trapped is just sortie everything en masse and run for it. I would have, at most, 2 days of attacks against his fastest, least damaged ships and while I think that the BBs and CAs are definitely doomed most of the CLs would survive. If he tries to save everything he will just end up saving nothing.

The main things to note here are as follows:
1. My Army HQ and 1 division are STILL trapped on the trails along the coast to Bombay. It took them one day to move ONTO the trails but it has taken over 10 days for them to move back ( and they still aren't done). Genius land movement design [8|].

2. My 4 divisions are sitting pretty at Poona. They have been cut off from resupply by an Allied Brigade moving in behind them but each division has over 1500 tons of supply with it and will hold out comfortably until relieved by the Armoured Brigade moving northward along the rail line joining Pangim and Poona.

3. The ongoing landing of 6 divisions at Trivandrum. With the northern flank secure at Poona and the southern flank secure at Madras I am now free to commit my main mass to the schwerpunkt of the drive through central India. I may also divert a couple of divisions to push the Allies out of Madras as I have all the time I need now that I have managed to cut the SLOCs from Aden to Karachi.
